When you tell someone you dream about Italy, Greece or Australia, people here usually nod in agreement, and understand. When your heart belongs in Denmark, things are different.
For some reason, I have to explain why. What’s so special about Denmark anyway? And I am always a little confused when I have to give reasons to love Vikingland. There’s so much to enjoy there.
The classic question is “what made you like Denmark?” And, quite honestly, I don’t remember when and why my curiousity turned into a passion.
What I do know, is who were the first Danes that entered my life. And those would be the members of the Danish band Mew. Is it because of them and their music that I am now a Denmark freak? Probably not. But they certainly had something to do with it.
Two years ago, I was lucky enough to meet the guys in Toronto. And surprisingly, although they are worldwide stars, they are incredibly cool and down to earth. It was before my first trip, and I wish I could talk to them again today, to tell them what I’ve experienced, in part thanks to them.
Anyway, every once in a while, I have a Mew craving, and I’ll spend hours revisiting my favorite tunes on Youtube, or my Ipod. I never was able to put my finger on one favorite song, but judging by how many times I’ve listened to it, I think that Water Slides is on my top 5 list.
Here’s a live version, recorded at the famous Roskilde music festival.
All I have to say is, “enjoy” π I sure hope you do.
Nice! π€π»

That’s cool. There’s some great music that comes out of that entire region. Are you familiar with Kaleo? Their from Iceland and they’re fantastic too. π

I’ve seen the name before, but I don’t know them… I’ll check them out π I am also curious about IamamIwhoamI, a Swedish singer… Gotta enjoy high pitched voices, but I like her odd style π

But you should know that Viking means people who go on raid and looting? The true horror of medieval times!

Oh I am aware of that, but history is filled with horror stories, humans are very skilled at slaughtering each other. I visited an inquisition museum in Carcassonne, France, and mankind’s creativity when it comes to making an enemy suffer is pretty impressive.
The dark side of history. Gladly, some good came out of it too…

This is very true, well my main point for commenting was may be that I know a guy here in Berlin (a psycho-therapist) promoting the old Norse Viking’s religion and I really stopped reading his book about that when he explained rituals performed with real blood. He practices all this at old mythical places etc. pp It is a quite male esoteric trip. So you see the old spirits are still alive!

Wow! Thanks for sharing this… I was totally unaware that some people still performed such rituals… That IS quite troubling, and I understand your comment much better now!
It is scary to think that some people perpetuate such acts. I can see why you stopped reading this man’s writings… I wouldn’t want to encourage him either…

When you go, would you mind taking an extra suitcase along? π

*starting to fold a few extra pairs of underwear and socks* I’ll make myself very tiny… I just hope the suitcase doesn’t have to go through X-Rays like in the customs series on tv. π

Very interesting, and sort of sweet, and sad.

I agree… I love the part
“Cover me with your long feathers, when I die,
Circle me with your long feathers…”
I don’t know why, it just speaks to me π The beauty of music…

They make me want to buy those huge earmuff-like headphones, and sit in a big beanbag, and just listen to their music all day long… But that would not be good for my productivity π
