Getting interested in another country is a lot of fun. Even if you don’t have the budget to fly over, or train by (I know, it doesn’t exist), you still can travel in your head.
Some people shouldn’t try it though, because with liking a foreign country (even worst if you get to the big L word) come responsibilities…
Example… Let’s take…. Me! We all know where I love. (I know it doesn’t exist…. Stop correcting me!! I find that cute, loving somewhere…)
Well because I love Denmark, I am now caring for all its citizens (even the bad people, because I don’t know everybody, and I can’t point out who I don’t like yet). And when something happens to Denmark, or Danes, I feel concerned. Not devastated but it twitches my heart a little. Like this afternoon when I heard about the terrorist attack in Egypt… The news reported that a Dane had been shot. I immediately thought it would be sad no matter the nationality of the wounded, but still, I had a twitch. Worse, when I read a minute ago that finally, there was no Dane injured, the man actually came from Sweden… Again, sad for the Swede all the same, but I had a little relief inner sigh.
It gets even worse if you actually KNOW people in the country… On top of caring for all 5 699 200 (based on December 2015 Wikipedia data) Danes all year long, I care about specific cities. So if, for an example, there were to be a mega storm in Aalborg, I would be worried. Did they stock enough food before the storm? Is the house alright? Did they get home in time not to be stuck on the road?
When it comes home, it is special too… Next year the IIHF an international junior hockey tournament will be hosted in Montreal… The little Vikings will be playing in my hometown; I’ll have to be there with my Dannebrog! Woot woot Denmark!!
So yes, liking another country is a lot of fun, but think about it before you get too involved. There are some naturals, and some even almost professionals among us, but it is not as easy as it looks.
A little advice if you decide to go for it anyway… Start with a small country, in a very peaceful part of the world… Younger, I started with Gibraltar… and that’s a perfect 1st place to love! Small country, few inhabitants to care for, not much happening to worry about… Enjoy!!
