I’ve talked about hygge before.
Cosy’s Danish little cousin is one of the things I like the most about Denmark. You know how some stereotypical images get to mind, when you think about some countries. And when you finally make the trip, and want to experience it, you are disappointed?
Well, Danes’ hygge is in no way overrated. It is part of the way of living, and you will feel it everywhere. From the blankets provided to cover your legs when you sit at an outside café table, to the warm feather duvets you can wrap yourself into, when you come back from a nice walk outdoors, hygge is in the details, and it just makes life that much better.
Hygge is about making the moment more comfortable, relax, peaceful and enjoyable. It’s slipping into your favorite sweat pants, lighting a candle, listening to the sound of the wood burning in the fireplace instead of watching tv, it’s having a good long chat with your best friends over a hot drink, knowing there’s nothing else on your agenda.
It is taking time.
During the holidays, I burnt my kalendarlys every night, following the Danish tradition. I noticed that even if it was just one little candle in my very North American livingroom, it was still changing the mood in the room. When the holidays came to an end, my kalendarlys was gone too, and I missed the warm dancing of the flame every evening.
So I went shopping and I bought new candles to get my little hyggeligt touch back. Since, I’ve been lighting a candle every night. Sometimes, it is just there, in the corner of my eye, and I don’t really pay attention to it. Others I sit and stare at the flame dancing…
Hygge is in the little things.
And I like little things!
Oh, well… Time for a little nap, now. But not before wishing you all a litlle hygge in your life too! You deserve it! The world would be much too crazy out there, without it!

I know about that series, yes. But I haven’t watched it yet! Have you watched it? It looks interesting, would you say it is worth ordering?

I watched it all on Netflix. I loved it. At one point I was certain that I could understand Danish (lol). Rita is one of the quirkiest characters I’ve come across although I suspect there are people who could grow frustrated watching her because she sometimes lives her life unapologetically and as if there are no consequences. But she also has a strong sense of justice. And some of it is just funny. I’m a fan. I was happy they added to the series after a hiatus and I’m hoping they do so again. Maybe you can see if there is a way to stream an episode so that you don’t purchase something you might not like.

Hehehehe I totally get that feeling… After watching many Danish series and movies, I too had moments when I could almost forget about the subtitles 😉 Then again, I do know a little Danish, but not nearly enough to follow the whole story 🙂
We don’t have Netflix at home, but I’ll try to find a way to get at least one episode, like you suggested. I am pretty sure I’ll like the series though. I saw a couple of clips, and the first person who suggested it to me knows me well, so I’ll probably buy the DVDs soon! I’ll let you know when I’ve tried a couple of episodes!! Thanks again for reminding me of it! xx

Love candles and yes watching the flames dance. Same reason I love to watch a campfire or a fire in a fireplace.

It is hard to describe it, because the sound of ”y” in Danish is the same as ”u” in French, and it is not used in English. But here is a little video that might help 🙂 It doesn’t really describe ”hygge” really well, but you’ll hear the word many many times!

I agree. Since I don’t have a fireplace a candle is soothing, unexplainable, really, but is. I found some candles that have wooden wicks so that when burned they sound like a fire crackling. Delightful!
