This weekend, you’d have to live in a cave not to know that our American friends are celebrating Thanksgiving. (I hope you all had a great one, and spent quality time with your family and friends!!)
Here in Canada, we celebrate Thanksgiving a couple of weeks earlier in the year, and it is much less an event than in the U.S. Quite frankly, I don’t celebrate Canadian Thanksgiving at all.
But being the weirdo that I am, I do celebrate American Thanksgiving. I have been for years, and I have a really odd tradition that I share with my little brother.
This goes a long way back, when we were just kids. We both really like the comedy Arthur 2: On the Rocks, with Dudley Moore and Liza Minnelli. We used to watch it over and over again. One scene, in particular, really made us laugh out loud.
If you are not familiar with the British movie, Arthur (Dudley Moore), who used to be insanely rich, has chosen his girlfriend (Liza Minelli) over his family’s fortune, and is left broke, having to learn to live a much more modest life.
In the following scene (the one little bro and I like) Arthur, his girlfriend and her father are about to celebrate a very low budget Thanksgiving.
That last line stuck with us through the years, and every Thanksgiving, I cook meatloaf and we share it together…
It’s cheap, easy to make, and we have good giggles. And tonight is meatloaf night, so in a few hours, Chéri and I will join Little bro and his boyfriend, and we’ll make the tradition live on. Let’s just keep our fingers crossed, so my meatloaf is more successful than Liza’s!
Happy Thanksgiving to you all!
