My inspiration is not at its peak lately, to say the least. So yesterday, when I received an email from NYC Midnight, announcing the upcoming 250-word Microfiction Challenge, I thought it might be a good idea to try it out.
Brutus participated to NYC Midnight Challenges on many occasions, and got me intrigued about the series of writing contests.
I am not naive, I don’t expect to make it past the first round, but the challenge sounds like fun, and who knows? I might get surprised, or at least get interesting feedback.
So I thought I’d practice a little before the actual challenge. But for that, I would need your help. For the 250 word Microfiction Challenge, NYC Midnight provides writers with three criterias to use for their story;
- A genre (Action and/or adventure, comedy, drama, fairy tale and/or fantasy, ghost story, historical fiction, horror, romance, romantic comedy, sci-fi, suspense and/or thriller, or open genre.)
- An action
- A word
For an example, ”Horror, listening to music, Kitten”. My story would then need to combine all three things, in less than 250 words.
So, if you’d be kind enough to take a little minute, I’d love if you could pick a genre, and action and a word, and leave them down in the comment box. I’ll write a story for every proposition, and I’ll link your blog into my post.
What do you say? Would you help me practice for the challenge?
Thank you in advance… I’m ready to work on my first story for you!
I think you should pick the three items and your story telling is outstanding, so need no suggestions to get a winner.👍🏻🤗

I couldn’t resist. However, I agree with the above suggestion, pick the words that mean the most to you 🙂

Mouahahahahahahahahah I should have seen this one coming, right? (it really made me laugh) I can’t really pick ideas of my own… But maybe I’ll get Chéri to help me out. He’s stuck with me 24-7… If he doesn’t cooperate, I know how to be incredibly annoying 😛

Or you could look at previous prompts. Or you could just fly blind. I was tossing up about whether or not to enter this one or not.

I hadn’t thought about checking previous prompts on the website… I’ll give that a try, thank you for the idea 🙂 And let me know if you decide to join in! I’m curious, have you ever been selected for the second round?

Just to update that, and just to show you how random things can be …. in the flash fiction competition round one has two stories. Each heat has about 35-40 people and the first 15 in each heat are awarded points 1-15. The highest 5 combined totals in each group go through to the next round.
I rather liked my first story and it received zero points – equal last, in other words.
My second story, which I thought to be a bit dull scored 15 – so outright first.
My combined total of 15 placed me 6th in my group …. so goodbye Brutus.

I think, from memory, that I made the penultimate round in the last short story prompt. But I usually just crash and burn

Thank you, Caramel 🙂 I’ll write my/your story tomorrow, and since you hesitated, I’ll try to use both ”confidence” and ”custard” in it 😉 An extra challenge can only be good in my preparation for the NYC Midnight Challenge…
