Block editor? Thanks, but no thanks!

Oh no they won’t…

I know we discussed this before, but now it seems to be happening. WordPress has started forcing bloggers to use the new(er) ”block” editor.

I am not happy, to say the least.

Of course I get that some of you like the new editor, and believe me… Good for you! (no sarcasm here) But I know that a fair share of us don’t enjoy it, and want to stay with the classic editor, and I just can’t stand the kind of comment ”You’ll get used to it!” anymore.

Why should I have to get used to this block editor, if I don’t like it? And why should you?? Blogging is not a job we’re getting paid for, giving WordPress the right to impose their rules. Am I paying them to get told how I should like to blog?

That’s ridiculous.

I am pissed.

Seriously, I am glad for those of you who enjoy the block editor, and those willing to make the switch. But if like me, you’re not interested at all, please speak up!

  1. I’m with you Cyranny…the block editor is a POS in my opinion. My question is: what’s the best way to complain directly to WP to change their mind? Can we post them direct or do we call support and bitch? I’m looking for the most direct and forceful way of getting our point across.

    1. Last time they announced the imminent arrival of the block editor, I talked to the chat tech support, and reported to them that many bloggers I knew weren’t interested at all with the switch. I even know some people who think about stopping their blogging activities if they don’t have a choice. Of course back then, they were still offering the choice between the block and classic editors. This time, the switch seems to be final when it happens.

      I would recommend writing to tech support and stating your preference. If enough of us do so, I can only hope they’ll consider changing their position.

      If not, at least we’ll have tried. 😉

I trialled the Block editor when it first came in and I hated it for the two weeks but then it all clicked and unfortunately I have to say that I love it now and wouldn’t ever go back to the Classic. I knew this would happen eventually as this is what wall Tech companies do. Apple is no better. They stop supporting the old stuff and you can’t use it any more, even though it’s still usable for you. I am just worried about my old pos ts that are still written in the classic editor. Will they not show on the reader? Will they be all gobbledygook in the formatting? Can I even access them anymore?
    Having said all that I am very happy to help you troubleshoot any problems you might encounter using the new editor if you can’t get satisfaction from tech support.

    1. Glad for you, you got to enjoy the new editor 🙂 You don’t have to worry about your old posts, from what I’ve read, they’ll still be available and will not be affected by the change. Good thing, because I think none of us would have the time to re-edit all of our posts…

      1. I am just a message away! I think the best thing about is the ability to move paragraphs and blocks up and down at will wil just one little click of the arrow. I don’t remember it being so easy to do this with the Classic editor. For someone like me or makes lots of adhoc paragraphs as they come pouring out of my brain, it gives me the flexibility to alter them into some logical structure afterwards, with ease.

      I like to write, not to edit text. And I don’t think we should have to learn the latter to enjoy the main reason we’re here.

  6. I don’t like it and made my feelings known. But those happy engineers don’t give a crap. I am just glad mine is not a paid blog.
    So as WordPress don’t give a crap about their writers who use it, meant I share my complaints about it on blog.
    I will stop writing on my blog soon. I have scheduled posts planned, so might let them go ahead. But me writing anymore will be less or none until announcement of my new blog elsewhere.
    Only going to comment on blogs I follow, or when I comment on others I don’t. But won’t blog on mine one day.

    1. i gave up mine..well officially at the end of the month. I am incapable of understanding the new block editor..and i don’t have enough years left to force myself to learn it. Would rather just respond to people’s posts and fade into the sunset.

      1. Yes, it’s a shame it has come to this. I could probably learn in the end myself, but then it would have to be on the computer all the time, tethered to my phone for the internet, but then that means changing my way of working and I can’t do it that way, as I don’t want to be using more Internet than needed to do that way. But the new editor layout is not my way of working, so effectively, even if I got the hang of it, it doesn’t mean I will like it.

  8. I really dislike the block editor as well.
    When WordPress first introduced it, I had concerns in terms of how accessible it’s going to be for blind people with screen readers, since I’m blind myself. It doesn’t seem to be an issue, and I’ve heard somewhere that they’ve even improved it, so kudos for that if it’s the case indeed (haven’t been bothered so far to test it myself in practice and very in-depth, just played around a little). But accessibility and usability/user-friendliness are two different things and, at least for me personally, the block editor is much more difficult to use. I also find it quite abstractive, perhaps because it’s more graphics-based than the classic one, I don’t know. But it doesn’t help with using it. Sure, I will get used to it if I’ll have to (hopefully, or otherwise I probably won’t have anywhere else better to blog or will post all of my posts via email or something, which doesn’t make for an overly aesthetically pleasing look, I believe, as you can’t do almost any formatting in an email post), but, like you said, why should we be forced to use something new we don’t like, rather than something that has worked well and we’re used to and enjoy using? I understand that technology has to develop and it’s brilliant that it does, because it offers more possibilities, I also understand that they need to promote what they create. But is promotion by forcing people to do something one way only a really good thing to do in longer perspective? It’s only going to discourage people. And I’ve seen a lot of people complaining about the editor since May so it could be a whole big bunch of discouraged people moving to Blogger or wherever else is more convenient, or, worse yet, stopping blogging at all. It doesn’t pay off I guess…
    The whole idea behind block editor is quite cool, or at least I can sort of see how it can appeal to visually-minded people and why, and so I think if WordPress was less aggressive with this and just let both editors coexist in harmony, a lot of people could move on to block editor willingly, over time, and change their mind about it, or use two interchangeably. Aside from that it’s really inconvenient and quite frustrating for those of us who are in the classic team, what they’re doing is illogical, in my humble opinion.
    Oh sheesh, that was a lengthy piece of writing! Sorry for the logorrhea, just wanted to chime in so that there’s more people on the classic team.

  11. I finally caved and used the “updated” editor rather than the one in the dashboard, but now that even that “updated” editor is gone, I’ll definitely be using the dashboard editor rather than this block editor pile of flaming excrement.
    The only REMOTELY good thing I can say about it is that I did find the “Code Editor” option, which for me, isn’t quite as terrible, though it does make changes to my carefully thought-out html without my permission.
    I’m a free user, and have toyed around with getting a plan, but if they’re forcing this pile o’ fecal matter on everyone, even those paying for the privilege of being here, then it’ll be a cold day in hell before they get any of my money.

  14. This reminds me of Microsoft and their constant upgrades in the guise of improving the user interface. Companies always seems to know, or think they know, what’s best for the user. I am fairly new to blogging but do have previous experience with WP, and rather like the graphic interface of the Block editor. So it seems I am in the minority.

  15. Good Morning Cranny! Needless to say I am as unimpressed with the new block editor as you are. I still have not figured out how to make adjustments to the classic never mind attempting to figure out how to use the new one. Where there is the + sign to add a block not sure if anyone mentioned that you can go into the blocks and pick the classic block. Either way I need to give myself a crash course so I did keep the email WordPress sent. But like yourself I firmly believe that we should not have to make a change to something we do not want to use. Ah well. Have an awesome day. 🙂

    1. Hey there Gorgeous!! Here’s what Keith suggested to get the ”classic” version:

      ” I go to the ‘write’ page, I click on the blue square with a cross on it and scroll down 5 rows to the word Classic.”

      I hope this will help! I haven’t been switched yet (knocking on wood) so I can’t give you my own hints yet… But I hope you’ll get used to this imposed change really quick.

  17. I’m not at all sure who would want to use all the functionality of this new editor, certainly not most of the many many blogs I follow on WordPress. I would rather have the option to use the old editor.

    I have a poetry blog, where I cut and paste text from WPS Writer to make a blog post. After a week of struggles, I have discovered the verse block, which appears to work the way the Classic editor worked.

    EXCEPT, when you schedule a post, the calendar used to show you all the other scheduled posts. Now it does not do this So how am I supposed to know if I’m scheduling my new post on a day when another post has already been scheduled????

    ALSO, I believe that there are bugs in the new editor. For example, I am having problems selecting images from my image library to be the featured image. It only works about 50% of the time.

    1. I agree and most of the blogs I follow probably won’t use half of the new features either.

I got in touch with a Happiness Engineer (via https://wordpress.com/help/contact) and was told that the classic editor is now ‘deprecated’. But: they’ve fixed it for me: they’ve forced my blog back to the classic editor. You can try contacting them yourself, and ask that they fix it for you, too — quote reference #23512102-hc.”
