Cyranny’s quickie!

If you had to give up four of your five senses, which one would you want to keep? (if you already are living without one, you may choose to gain that sense back)

I am not the first blogger to start a ”Question of the day” series. I used to participate to Danny’s Let me ask you a question posts regularly, but since he has almost stopped pubishing them, I thought I’d give it a go. We’ll see if I stick to it, depending on the answers I get!

    1. I can’t imagine that kind of situation…. and I’ve been thinking about it, but I just can’t make up my mind. Cutting out so many ways to ”feel” the outside world…. Woaaaa. Scary thought, if you ask me!

    1. I haven’t made my own choice, yet…. As you said, I’d miss every other sense soooo much! I lost the sense of tasting for a couple of weeks, after a surgery, and though most people would probably think that it isn’t a big deal, I realized how unpleasant eating is without it. Thank you for joining in, Caramel 🙂

  1. I was thinking ‘sight’ as well – yet I see so much with my eyes closed. And I can hear clearest in absolute silence. Taste would be hard to surrender – I think I can taste everything that I can feel or that I can smell.
But I never give up anything. It has to be taken from me.

    1. Taste is horrible to surrender. I lost it for a couple of weeks, and eating becomes the dullest thing to do. I never truly experienced losing any of the other four, except sight, when we had dinner in a restaurant that offered eating in a room deprived of any light. Scary thought to imagine loosing 4 out of 5…

      1. Yes! For to think about never hearing the sound of laughter again, or the the sound of my loved one’s voices is so painful, the sound of crashing waves. But still, to live in a world of darkness is even more unbearable to me! Hopefully none of us will ever lose any of our senses!

    1. I am trying to imagine every ”combo” of losing 4 senses at once, and I still can’t make up my mind… I agree that it would be terrible not to hear the people I love, or the sounds that soothe me anymore… But trying to imagine living in a body deprived of sight and touch at the same time, gives me the impression of living in a prison… I’ll keep thinking 😉

  2. smell…it is the first to show up and the last to leave. With scent you can “see” in your mind memories long forgotten, you can “hear” sounds …………..everything from your earliest childhood on into old age.

    1. Smell is a very strong sense. I think most people forget it because we believe we rely more on sight, hearing and touch, but a smell-less life would be terrible. Thanks for your thoughts, Suze 🙂 xx

    1. I think the fact that blindness and deafness are the two most common sense-deprivations we know, makes people think that they couldn’t live without sight or hearing… But maybe I am wrong? I just hope nobody ever experienced such a senseless life!

    1. It SUCKS not to taste. Been there, done that, hated it! Especially when others can taste and you’re left with just having spoonfuls of stuff in your mouth while they enjoy all the flavors. I am not sure which of the 5 I’d keep, but I know taste is something I would miss a lot if I had to lose it for good!

  3. This is one of the questions that comes back to haunt on a continued basis as it is a real Thought provoker – nice 🙂

As to the answer – well this is where it can become complicated – you see to many we don’t just have 5 senses – some say we have 6, others say we have 7, 8, 15 or 21 – do we include the likes proprioception important for balance, but what of my other 6th? My gift…
Mm, l think if l had no other choice and l had to lose one – ok, it would be hearing.

    1. Thanks for the kind words, Rory 🙂 I must say, I caught myself with this one! I’ve been thinking all day about losing senses, and I still can’t decided! Hehe

I did think about all these other senses, but since not everybody is familiar with them, and it would have made things way too complicated, I just went with our 5 ”main” senses 🙂 But very good point!

I am curious, you mentionned you’d pick hearing if you had to lose one, but which one would you keep, if you had to lose 4? 🙂

    1. I was thinking about Helen Keller, who, as you might already know, was both blind and deaf. What a challenge to overcome! Adding 2 more missing senses would probably too much to take for most people!! Thank you for participating 🙂

      1. Although Helen Keller has always been an inspiration, I found her predicament terrifying.
I guess reading or thinking about something like this makes us value all the wonderful things that we take for granted.

It was nice chatting with you.

  4. Tough question! I can’t seem to even make up my mind which ones to give up or keep if the occasion demands, which I hope will never be the case. Lol. Still thinking while I’ve enjoyed reading the different viewpoints. This question of the day series will be interesting. Love the feeling of learning more… 🙂

    1. Glad you enjoy it too, Stella 🙂 It is so interesting to see the different points of view! I try to pick questions where the answers can’t be debated as right or wrong, and so far, the discussions have been very cool!
