Making a difference…

1704335398583

.

For a good while now, I’ve been feeling quite meh.

I’ve thought about it a great deal, because, let’s face it… Going day in, day out thinking that I was ugly, aging too fast and feeling useless was quite unpleasant.

And recently, when my mind was in a blurry state, I confessed to one of my dearest friends what I guess I hadn’t realized during my long hours of pondering why I felt so bad about myself to begin with.

I always thought that what I really wanted was to be successful enough to have a good life, to write something worth surviving me, or ultimately, with a little (a LOT OF) chance, getting legally adopted by her majesty, the Queen of Denmark.

But what my sorry online whining revealed, is that I just want to make a difference in our world. And though I do work on that actively, whenever I can… It just didn’t seem to work.

I just felt like I didn’t have what it takes to really make a real difference. And that made me miserable.

And my dear (and really, really patient) friend sent me the following today. It is said to be the philosophy of Charles Schulz, the creator of ”Peanuts” (I don’t want to take any credit, I just need to share it).

.

You don’t have to actually answer the questions. Just ponder on them. Just read it straight through, and you’ll get the point.

1- Name the 5 wealthiest people in the world.

2- Name the last five Heisman trophy winners.

3- Name the last five winners of the Miss America pageant.

4- Name ten people who have won the Nobel or Pulitzer prize.

5- Name the last half dozen Academy Award winners for best actor or actress.

6- Name the last decade’s worth of World Series winners.

.

How did you do?

.

The point is, none of us remember the headliners of yesterday.

These are no second-rate achievers.

They are the best in their fields.

But the applause dies.

Awards tarnish…

Achievements are forgotten.

Accolades and certificates are buried with their owners.

.

Here’s another quizz. See how you do on this one:

1- List a few teachers who aided your journey through school.

2- Name three friends who have helped you through a difficult time.

3- Name five people who have thaught you something worthwhile.

4- Think of a few people who have made you feel appreciated and special.

5- Think of five people you enjoy spending time with.

.

Easier?

.

The Lesson:

The people who make a difference in your life are not the ones with the most credentials, the most money…or the most awards. They simply are the ones who care the most.

.

Take a moment to think about it.

This is so true… And though it doesn’t diminish in any way the achievements of the people winning prizes and awards of all kinds, it also means that us, normal people CAN make a difference too. And that’s very comforting to me.

Thank you Little Miss G, for sharing this today. You’ll never realize how much it hit home. I needed to read it, and I hope it will make you Lovelies feel better about yourselves too!

I really do.

      1. Simple kindness goes a long way… Or so I hope. Thank you for sharing the thoughts of a wise man. If it can touch just another heart, it will be worth the share 😉

  2. a person never has a clue how many lives have been impacted just by KNOWING that person. After George died I was suddenly hearing stories about how he “helped” people, how he made them feel better or just made them laugh. People came up to me at stores, museums, the library, a church, a grocery store…and all of them mourned his loss and told me how he had changed something in their lives for the better. Dear girl, you HAVE made a difference. You have touched so many people with your stories, your words, your sense of sheer unadulterated FUN. And you’d better work fast on that Danish adoption…Queen M is about to abdicate for her son!

    1. Oh Madame Suze… I was about about to say that I regretted not answering your couple of prior messages earlier (I will though… Probably over the weekend), but now I mostly feel bad for not being there when you lost George. You balastic woman are one of my favorite human beings, even if we never had a chance to meet in person, yet 😛 *Big hugs*

And yes, I will work overtime to get adopted by Margrethe II, and if it doesn’t work, I’ll get on her son’s case, BIG TIME LOOOOOOOOOOOL

  3. I think it important to recognise that literally everything one does makes a difference, so one should be constantly considering whether any and every action leads to outcomes, however large or small, that one can sleep in good conscience with.
