And here’s to… (June 17th FFF)

I was invited (well, not personally, but still…) to join the Fandango’s Friday Flashback!

Fandango scrolls back, every Friday, and gives a second chance to a post he had published on the same date, years before. I thought it was a great way to remember some of the stuff I did a while back, and I decided to participate…

So here it is!

Written on June 17th of 2019, here’s a cute short story I wrote for one of Fandango’s Flash Fiction Challenges.

I hope you’ll enjoy it (again), and I wish you’re safe and well, wherever you are…

Is everyone here, now?

Walter gave a good look around, and pretended to count the guests, although he couldn’t remember how many of them had been invited in the first place. There was no glass left on the garden table, and he guessed that everyone meant to be there, was.

He nodded to Priscilla, who proceeded to welcome everybody, and give a short but eloquent speach. They all rejoiced, raising their glasses high, and exchanging glances and parading their Sunday’s finest.

We really should stop doing that, Kenneth…

Staring from the building’s terrace, Clarisse and him watched over. Too far to hear what they were saying, but close enough to keep a close eye on them. He gently shushed her, enjoying the bursts of laughter that made it all the way to them.

If Mrs Clarington finds out, we’ll both be in big trouble Ken, and you know that!

He couldn’t help rolling his eyes at Clarington’s mention.

Oh come on, C! When’s the last time you’ve seen any of them show up, on a Sunday afternoon? And anyway, what could they accuse us of? Being nice?!?

Giggling among the group of elders caught their attention again, and they remained silent, for a while.

Kenneth had taken the habit of buying a bottle of sparkling wine on his way to work, every other Sunday. In the morning, he left unsigned invitations in the Alzheimers wing patients’ rooms, while doing his first round of the day, and set the table in the senior home’s yard in the afternoon, shortly before the gathering.

Nobody knew the occasion. And nobody cared.

But everybody had a good time… Kenneth looked at Clarisse.

Half of them don’t even get visits anymore… I’m willing to take the risk of getting fired!
