Roadtrip… – FFFC

Come in, come in, Miss! You’re going to burn out there…

The old man was probably right. Especially after her half hour walk in the sun. Entering the house, she gave a quick look around. She wasn’t really worried, but she’d feel better only when she’d hit the road again.

She reached into her bag, and got her cell phone out.

Oh, don’t bother with that… We don’t get them internet or cellular things in the area. But don’t worry, I’ll call Barry. I’m pretty sure he can fix your car… And he lives just a couple of miles from here…

He showed her to the kitchen, inviting her to sit at the table. Filling a tall glass with some brownish liquid he kept in the fridge, the old man left the drink for her and walked out of the room. She could hear mumbling from a distance, but couldn’t quite catch what he was talking about.

She picked the glass, and smelled its content. It seemed kind of sweet, and she risked taking a sip. The icy sweet tea felt like a caress down her throat, and she felt bad for doubting the old man.

Where exactly are we?

The man walked back in, a couple of large books under his arm. Opening them in front of her, on the table, he started looking through the atlas. She didn’t remember the last time she had seen a paper map. His knotted fingers ran down the little lines, until he reached a dot at the bottom of a page.

We’re just… Here!

She noticed how far off course she had gone, after losing the GPS signal. Damn!

Oh, Barry will check your car out, no trouble. He’ll come first thing tomorrow morning. You can stay here for the night!

Damn!!
