*Warning! This post is incredibly boring… You still have time to click on the “back up arrow” at the top of the screen! Go ahead, click! No? You silly person… Ok, but don’t say I didn’t warn you! 😉 *
When your head feels like it is clogged like a toilet? And you can’t remember where you’ve put the plunger. Or if you have a plunger, for that matter. I know many of you Lovelies can relate.
I woke up this morning with that very feeling. Thank God, Chéri stayed in bed! So I could sit on the couch by myself, in complete silence, and try to sort the mind clutter a little before the action begins in the apartment.
I hate when this happens, but at least I know why.
The department I work for, has changed a lot recently. To make a long story short, like in every business in the world, efforts were made to reduce staff. Less staff = Less money spent = Good! For the company, that is.
So, obviously, our schedules were changed a bit, so we’d still cover the 5am to midnight shifts, 7 days a week. Same job, just minus one worker. Doesn’t seem terrible, right? The problem is that our department is not a huge calling center. If you have 50 people answering the phone, and let go of one… People will probably not even notice. But when you cut one worker out of a team of 7, things can become problematic.
Oh, of course, we get every other week end off. And “as is” the new schedule isn’t so bad. But there is one thing, bosses seem to have forgotten.
People get sick, go on vacation and sometimes randomly take a day off!
And there is no buffer left in our otherwise “ok” schedule. So if someone doesn’t show in one day, it usually means someone else is bound to either go through a long stretch without a rest, or cutting on what little time off we still have.
That’s a shame, really, because I enjoy doing what I do. I am good at it, my customers like me, and the pay is very decent. But I feel like me and my co-workers are getting burnt out.
I just finished a 9 days straight stretch yesterday night. I should say “another one”, because it has become pretty common.
And that’s why my head feels like a clogged toilet. And that sucks.
But you know what? Talking is the best therapy, and I already feel a lot better… I should just put a warning at the begining of the post to announce how terribly boring it really is! LOL I think I’ll do it. This isn’t, by all means, my most entertaining story, but I think it was necessary to start the day! It is not interesting, informative or even funny, but it really helped me.
So, if you are silly enough to still be here reading, thank you! I appreciate that you sat with me, and listened. Sometimes that’s all we need. Someone to listen…
And now back to our usual programs!
.
Doing more with less, thats the corporate motto. It’s not likely to change now that they know y’all can cover it after downsizing. Wouldn’t it be lovely just to win the lotto? 😃

OMG I dream about it every week. And I’d settle for a lot less than the jackpot. I need very little in life, and if I could just cover let’s say a year worth of expenses, and focus on doing something with my writing… I’d take it gladly 🙂

Something similar happened to me before I was downsized right out of a job. They slowly let people go… a few at a time… and the rest of us were left to cover. After a while, I was doing the better part of four different jobs. It was exhausting. I was almost relieved when I was the one affected by the staff reduction. [Of course now, the no-job thing has gone on for too long, but that’s another story…]
Anyway… I’m glad you have a break. And I’m all about winning some serious money, too. They say money doesn’t fix everything but it would fix a LOT for me. And make everything else easier. Yeah… that’s the dream… being the next big winner…
I hope you get to do something relaxing… even if that means doing nothing… 🙂

I am listening to the homage to Leonard Cohen show, “Tower of songs” as I catch up on my messages… It’s already going a lot better. I knew it would but I hate waking up with a cluttered head in the morning…
I’m sorry to read you had to go through the same “cutting down on staff” situation… I know it’s the ways of running a business, but it is regretable that big bosses don’t see, or just don’t care that they are wearing workers out for the sake of a few extra bucks…
Oh well… It’ll probably just force me to be more creative in the long run, and I might find something else to pay the bills eventually 😉

That’s the goal, isn’t it? Find a better way to pay the bills.
I’m glad your day is going better… 🙂

Me too… There’s nothing a little Leonard won’t fix… Well yes, but it fixes a lot of things 😛
I so wish there were less brilliant writers… I would be so good at sitting on the porch in front of my tiny house by the beach, writing my next best seller!! LOL

I used to think that same thing about writing… but then I realized that I’ve grown quite empty so I probably couldn’t do it anyway. Not sure what happened to me. I used to be an endless source of stories…

Want a clue? I would think that with all there is on your mind, it is more than understandable that your imagination is not your brain’s priority… Maybe? 🙂

That sounds logical. Of course, that means I’m in big trouble… because I don’t think all of that other stuff is ever going to go away… 🙁 It doesn’t really matter… My writing isn’t good enough anyway…

You know that could come as a little insulting to almost 3000 bloggers, right? 😉 LOL

🙁 I certainly don’t mean it that way! Not good enough to write a novel… or write professionally, I mean. And also all dried up. I hate that most of what I write lately is just whining about my life. (Other than my A-to-Z posts…)

(I was pulling your leg, of course… 😉 ) I think you’re just looking at your writing with dark glasses…. You have the proof right there that you CAN write good stuff 🙂 Your A to Z Challenge is doing great, and it is working because you challenged yourself 🙂 You’d just have to challenge yourself on a longer period of time, to come up with a whole book! 🙂 xx

Oh yeah… This is getting a bit crazy. I hope I don’t get to the point where I’ll have to look for something else soon… I like my job, but I fear the schedules will eventually get the best of me.

employers always think downsizing is the way to save money…but it always, always starts a downward spiral that ends in complete loss of the entire office. Stupid thing to do. I hope they pull their collective heads out of their asses for their employees sake.

I hope so too, but I don’t see it coming anytime soon… Sadly. I wish the big bosses would see that I really want to do a good job, but there is no way someone can be productive in this kind of situation.

I’ll refer to Exhibit A where I stated that I was self employed. Time for me to add another reason to remain self employed. 🤔

It seems like the same thing is happening all over the world. Jobs are scarcer, pay is less, and all the employers want you to do more for less money!

Absolutely, Mark! In my department, we get little tasks added to our usual job every now and then. We get told “it’s only….”
But as the years go on, all the little this and that add up, and I am afraid they’ll end up pushing us to the limit eventually.
And you are right, it is the same everywhere…. Sadly.
Warm welcome to The Cove, by the way 🙂 I hope to see you around again soon!! xx

I am sure it is, Ours NHS, schools are having a recruitment problem, because of how the budgets are being cut.
The problem is, if you keep doing it, then its really going to fuck up a country

I provide technical support to retailers (convenience and grocerie stores, pharmacies and other businesses) who have equipment to sell lotteries. I also take care of the network that connects the terminals to our central…. Not exciting when said like this 😉
