  1. My father and his two brothers used to muck about in boats in Sydney Harbour from their parents house on the water at Balmain, which was then a lowly working class suburb, but is now well beyond the reach of a humble journalist such as was their father. Their names were Lindsay Arthur, Robert Alexander, and Douglas Albert … hence LA, RA, DA. So they built and named their first boat ‘Larada’. The original Larada sank somewhere out off the old public baths, so they set about building another which became, naturally, Larada 2.
Larada 2 was identified, during WW2, as a hazard to navigation and was towed out into the channel by the navy and also sunk.
About 70 years later I was lucky enough to come across a vessel myself, which is moored in the Hawkesbury river to the north of Sydney. It’s name, needless to say, is Larada 3. So far she is still afloat.

  2. The Womble after the wombles of Wimbledon Common. A British tv show for kids. We have a small metal boat and we call it the Silver Womble. It used to have a 5hp motor and our son used to toot about in it when we had a place at a lake. Now we only have land around us and the Silver Womble is aground. My husband says it is waiting for the flood. Hmmm…..
