Only four nights left before take off!
Today, I’ve completely emptied my backpack, and gone through my traveling kit. I made lists, lots of them… Because we have a little extra challenge this year. It seems like airlines have cut down on the weight allowed when it comes to carry on luggage. We’ll need to pack five pounds lighter than our previous trips. It might not look like a huge difference, but when you drop from 22 pounds to 17… It is kind of a big deal (my empty backpack weighs four pounds already, so try to imagine how well you’d do, having to choose only 13 pounds-worth of clothes and essential stuff for 23 days).
Then I contacted my banks, to let them know that I would soon be abroad, and that it would be quite annoying if they didn’t let me use my money in Denmark. Nothing to say about that, the operation went very smoothly.
But… (there’s always a ”but”)
Next step was getting a cell phone forfait to be able to use my phone in Vikingland. I thought ”Easy peazy”… But I was wrong. I’ve been a Virgin member for quite a long time now, and for my last trips, I bought a fixed prized deal that included a number of calling minutes, and some internet data over a period of a month.
So I connected to the Virgin’s customer service chat, and started to talk with an agent. I explained the reason of my enquiry, and what I expected to get.
I’m sorry, we don’t do these deals anymore.
Ok. I asked what my options were, since the ”old deals” weren’t available anymore.
You can get the ”Great traveler’s plan”. In shorts, you use your normal plan, but everyday you use your cell phone abroad, it costs you only 16$.
”Only” 16 bucks?? A day?? Using my normal plan?? At what point should I feel like lucky about being a ”Great traveler”? Because, as I explained to the agent, I need my phone at least once a day, as Chรฉri and I need to confirm our Aibnb apartment rentals and stuff like that. But we don’t make many calls, or overuse the data, preferring to relate on free wi-fi whenever we can.
Sixteen dollars a day? Come on! That means 368$ for our trip. If only one of us uses our cell phone.
Insane, if you ask me. Dang, I get why you call the fools agreeing to this ”Great travelers”! Even the agent still chatting with me seemed to understand that it was wrong.
Maybeย you could buy a local SIM card when you get on location?
I was already googling that hoping it would be cheaper (how could it not be?).
But I need your advice, my Lovelies… If you live in Europe, do you know if foreigners can get a SIM card easily to use their phones when traveling abroad. I sure hope so.
Because otherwise, I’ll be phoneless for about a month. And that would suck.
Especially if I can’t post in the meanwhile.
Hi! I think it is pretty simple to buy a sim card! Does your phone have roaming? You’ll need to turn that on! but I do think its pretty easy!
Safe travels! xoxo

Thank you Carol Anne ๐ I’ve just checked and I do have the roaming option (I must say I had never checked it before). I’ll keep that in mind when I go shopping for my Danish SIM card. xx

16$ is expensive for international roaming. Mine cause $10 US and I don’t even want to use that for my upcoming UK trip. I’m gonna go with a SIM card from Amazon for $30. Not sure how that’s going to work out, good luck on your trip.

First of all… You’re going to the UK soon?? How exciting! You should let Trina know ๐
I’ll check if I can get an Amazon SIM card before leaving… If it works, it would save me lots of time upon arrival in Copenhagen. If it doesn’t, it will still be less expensive than 16 dang dollars a day. LOL
All the best for your trip too!! If you don’t mind me asking, when are you leaving?

I’m leaving on the 13th and will be visiting UK and Scotland. I think at this point, anything will be less expensive than the 16$. I think the other option would be to buy it when you get there. Good luck.

I havenโt traveled in Europe but getting a new sim with your id/ passport shouldnโt be a big issue.

I sure hope so Sadje… As I mentionned above, I’ll try to get a SIM card before leaving Canada, not to have to bother searching for one when we get to Copenhagen. But if I don’t, I’m pretty confident I’ll find a way to get arround the 16$ a day. Too bad for Virgin ๐
