My (maternal) grandmother died when I was 4. I don’t know what sort of cook she was, but I know that my mother couldn’t cook. She could BAKE like nobody’s business, but cook? Nah. I say (modestly of course) that I’m a far better cook than she was, but my sugar cookies never measured up. Nor my haystacks (a homemade candy consisting of Chinese noodles, cashews and melted butterscotch and chocolate chips. You mix all the ingredients and mound them with a spoon or your fingers (if they’ve cooled) and make stacks out of them. Ma was great at making those.
A round roti! Never could make a perfect round.

My mom makes the best chicken soup. She’s given me the recipe, and I can’t even come close to hers.

The main thing my mum was famous for was a date and walnut cake.

None. My mother did not like cooking and so her cooking was not memorable. So I have been able to chart my own course as a cook.

My mother in law’s potato salad, despite everyone trying, not one person in the family can make it the same!
