When is your home country’s national holiday? Do you celebrate it?

  1. ‘Australia Day’ is a highly controversial event here. It is celebrated on January 26 when, in 1788, Arthur Phillip arrived, uninvited, and started setting up shop.
The indigenous community here, who had lived quite happily without the benefit of European ideas for many centuries quite understandably refer to the day as ‘Invasion Day’ – and that certainly seems to put the day into a more accurate historical context.
There is a push to move it to another day during which we might all celebrate our residency …. and I, for one, will not be doing any celebrating until that is a reality.

  2. The Forth of July/Independence Day. I don’t really celebrate it, especially since the big tradition is fireworks and my dog is terrified by fireworks.

  3. Waitangi Day here in New Zealand is on Feb 6th. It’s a day remembering the treaty signed between the colonists and the Maori – highly controversial here too.

  4. I guess ours would be St George’s day on 29th April for England, but weirdly all the other St’s days are celebrated more particularly St Patricks Day on 17th March (Ireland) but we also have St David’s day 1st March (Wales) and St Andrew 30th November (Scotland)

I celebrate none of them, I am guessing this might come as a shock to you 😉
