People today do not know how to handle reality. They want everything to be fun and easy, and are not prepared to handle life or the real world, which can often times be neither fun or easy. They are looking for ways to escape and to only feel happy thoughts and emotions. they do not know how to handle life when it gets ugly and messy.
Fear of death and the unknown. It was always this way, which is why people have always made up gods and fairy tales even before there was paper to write them down.
The “real world” is a scary place, especially now that the news cycle is 24/7. Plus, in fantasy land daydreaming, you can pick and choose who to interact with. 😃
In the world we live in now we are bombarded with information , most of it negative, on a constant basis. We have not evolved to a state where we can deal with so much information. We need a break and a pause button and this is why we retreat from the “real” world.

Yes. I think people were tougher and stronger in the past, and were more prepared to deal with the harsh realities called life. Not so today.
