I don’t have time…

Time flies, we all know it.

And the older we get, the faster it goes by. In some cases, we use it as an excuse not to do certain things. We’d like to try out new things, or pick up on some left out projects, but we just don’t have time for it.

Sounds familiar?

A couple of years back, when I started blogging, I decided to learn Danish. It seemed like a silly idea for a lot of people around me, since it would be of little use in my daily life, but I didn’t care about what they thought. It was quite a challenge, though, Danish being complicated and with no school offering Danish classes here in Quebec.

But it didn’t stop me, and with the help of Babbel and Duolingo, I worked hard and I got to the point where I could communicate simple informations and understand stuff like restaurant menus, and train station indications. Not anywhere near “fluent”, but I had good basics.

Then, I let myself believe that I didn’t have time for it anymore. I stopped practicing on both websites, and let time fly by. And even if I really believed that I was short on time, I missed it. I still want to someday be able to hold a conversation with a Dane, or watch my favorite Danish movies without subtitles.

Yesterday I had a flash, while playing Candy Crush.

The tv was on, the Babbel ads were nagging me, and I had a flash.

I don’t usually play online games. Candy Crush is just an addictive puzzle game I am really good at, and that let’s me put my brain in “off” mode. When I start playing, it can easily suck half, or even a whole hour of my time away. An full hour swapping candies up and down, or left and right.

And I thought “Hey! Why not take this wasted time, and use it to start learning again?”  I closed my Candy Crush window, opened Babbel (wondering if I’d even remember my password) and went through a couple of lessons.

And I plan to do the same as often as I can. When I feel like playing a little, I’ll just go on Babbel or Duolingo, and learn a few new words, or practice for a while. If I really want to learn Danish (and I do) I will succeed (and I will).

I have time for it.

I am sure you too spend some time doing something useless in your daily routine. Wether it is watching pointless tv shows, playing useless games or anything else, there is always a little time that can be spared.

If you have a dream, or a passion that you have put on the back burner, giving yourself the excuse that you don’t have time… Claim that wasted time back, and make it happen! Because at the end of the road, you’ll be more sorry for not reaching your goals than not achieving level 600!

Unless your dream is to rock at Candy Crush. In that case, just keep playing! Mouahahaha

  1. Never got into candy crush but I do have another I like, word game. Perfectly said, we can all find time for something to get our mind off other things. I mostly use it at night when I can’t sleep.

    1. The people behind these online games are geniuses! Wether they are puzzle or word games, they have this way of making us focus completely and not think about anything else 🙂 I hope it helps with your sleepless nights. Insomnia is terrible in itself, if you ended up bored on top of it, it would be the worst!

  2. I found myself addicted to Candy Crush a while back, then it became Words with friends, and Yahtzee With Buddies… all addictive. Yes, it turned my brain off. I noticed it was taking away from all that was around me and the things I needed to take care of. I had to stop myself immediately. LOL!

    1. Mouahahahaha Yes, it can be time consuming… and I wouldn’t be surprised if I read somewhere that there are rehab centers for addicted players 😛 Glad you got out before needing any help LOL

  3. Time. I use it unwisely far too often. I’m trying to manage it better but still…..

Good for you learning Danish. I can understand more than I can speak – the Danes still look at me in total confusion when I try to say things though. 😉

    1. I am terrible with time management. I plan very well, but I tend to have trouble following my perfect schedules 😛

I think we should team up! LOL I understand pretty well written Danish but when people speak, I have a lot more difficulty. Weirdly, I am apparently pretty good at talking. So maybe you could listen to people, and I could answer back LOL

    1. Exactly! Life would be so boring if we only did what we ‘have to’ do. A little fun is important! I think with a little work it is possible to have fun and not waste our precious time 🙂

    1. That’s a wise way to go, Billy 🙂 You are right, and maybe I should give a thought about breaking my bigger challenges into a series of smaller ones. There is probably a better chance to succeed that way!

      1. I only reached this point after illness downsized my life for me. Now it’s a series of easily managed pieces. I’m not capable of anything grandiose

      1. I got addicted for a while, and I kept telling me it was probably a good work out for my memory as an excuse to spend way too much time playing it! I don’t play anymore, but Cheri is still hooked and plays every night, while I blog.
