Random Danish Memories…

IMG_0696

Odense…  Hometown of the very famous Hans Christian Andersen, although he spent little time there. Doesn’t ring a bell? Ever heard of The ugly ducklingThe little mermaidThe little match girl?

If you have young children, you’re probably familiar with the movie Frozen? The animation film was inspired by Hans Christian’s tale, Snedronnigeng (The snow queen).

Third largest city in Denmark, Odense is a beautiful place to wander around, especially walking along the river running through its heart. If you are patient enough, it will lead you to the city’s beautiful zoo.

If you visit, make sure to take some time to enjoy Kongens Have (The King’s garden) just behind Odense’s Domkirke (Cathedral)… One of my all time favorite parks, especially during spring, when all the flowers are in bloom.

One of Fyn Island’s gems, Odense is definately a must see, if you are planning a tour around Denmark!

    1. Awww, that’s pretty cool! It amazed me to realize how many of these stories I got told as a kid, were from HC Andersen… It was very special to visit the house where he was born, and learn about his tormented life… 🙂 Thank you for sharing this piece of your childhood!! xx

  1. I few weeks ago I stumbled across a travel show on public television that was featuring Odense that day. What a wonderful city! I immediately thought of you, of course. I can understand your love of all things Dane.

    1. 🙂 Do you know Halfdan Rasmussen? A Danish friend introduced me to his poems for kids… I wish I had know Danish as a child, and my mom had read me these cute poems too… Then again, she would have had a terrible French accent. Maybe that wouldn’t have been a good idea after all 😛 Mouahahahaha

      1. The Canadian French always was a difficult one for me to understand ! The name doesn’t ring any bells but I’m sure I have. Do you speak any danish yet? Hvordan gar det?

      2. Det går godt, tak! Hvad med dig? Jeg taler dansk en lidt, men er jeg ikke så godt!

Hehehe… I just picked back my Danish lessons online. I admit to have put that aside for a while, due to lack of time, but I really want to keep improving it. My talking is terrible, but I can manage to read a little, which comes pretty handy during my traveling, especially when I wander away from the main cities, hehehehe

And yes, our accent here in Québec is pretty tricky for people who learned “European” French. The vocabulary can be confusing too… 😉

      3. I’m pretty good with all Scandinavian languages (Swedish, Norwegian, danish), French and English. Well…French is in there somewhere but don’t use it enough.

      4. That often the problem, with language learning… You work hard, somehow get to master the basics, but it is difficult to keep practicing it on a regular basis.

  3. Ah, Denmark is so beautiful. I have been there a couple of times when I still lived in Germany and my husband lived there for some time. In Denmark not Odense. Can’t remember if I’ve been there. But have been to Copenhagen and one if the North Sea Islands. We both would love to go back some day. That’s one dream to work for! It’s just the best place in the world!
