I had always heard that it was Cohen’s reminiscing about when he and Janis Joplin lived in the Chelsea Hotel in NYC and lyrics are about their relationship. I’m sure there’s more to the song / story.

I saw one of his last concerts here, in Montréal… The gentleman had such a way to tell stories, and a delicious sense of humor 🙂

Nice! Is that a matchbook? Did you actually save it? Just the other day my husband was telling me about getting a matchbook from the White House ( during Bush Sr. as President). But he was a smoker then and used up all the matches and threw away the souvenir matchbook!!
