As someone who grew up hearing the words “I love you” from people who treated me in ways that no one would ever treat someone they loved, I’m firmly in the actions-speak-louder-than-words camp. In other words, I try to show my loved ones that I love them, rather than tell them I love them and expect them to take my word for it. Talk, as you may have heard, is cheap.
That said, when a loved one tells me they love me, I respond immediately with “I love you, too.” If they SAY the words “I love you,” then it’s obviously important to them to HEAR the words “I love you,” and it would be unloving of me not to say it.
