Not sure if it’s a trick but I just don’t over buy. And I’ve managed to train myself to be ok with going to the store a second time in the week for vegetables I didn’t buy the first time. Food waste is a huge problem in the US.
I have a few tricks that allow me to buy in bulk and still preserve. Foodsaver vacuum and a freezer helps. When it comes to fresh produce I try and buy as needed as opposed to large quantities. Sure if I buy the bag of 6 avocado’s I may save a little but if I end up throwing three out I didn’t really save over buying 1 or 2 more often. The grocer is close enough that the carbon footprint to get there is minimal. The one trick I dobuse is to preserve herbs. I can never use the bunch of parsley or cilantrobefore it wilts or goes slimy but I’ve found that cleaning the bottoms and cutting the ends off, putting them into a cup of water covering the root end, covering the cup with a Ziploc bag and placing them into the fridge will help them keep fresh for up to 3 weeks. Just remember to change the water every few days.
I use up all of my leftovers as creatively as possible. I also freeze a lot of foods. If tomatoes are going soft, I turn them into a sauce. I also make my own dog food, which also helps.
I don’t cook, so I buy what I’m going to eat. The only food waste I’ve produced in the last six months was a quarter gallon of milk that soured before it was supposed to (I stupidly left it on the counter overnight), and a few plates of food that I simply did not like that someone made for me. I tried for two or three days and I couldn’t choke it down. It was time to throw it away because it wouldn’t go another day, and then I ordered take out. But I did try and refused to bring any other food into this house until I ate it. I literally couldn’t do it. So I don’t know if that’s really my waste, or it was their waste for having put those ingredients together *that way*. I also found out that I wasn’t the only one that attempted the exact same thing and failed miserably…
So truly, I don’t know if that’s my food waste, or ultimately, the chef’s…?
