I get lots more compliments from total strangers than I do from people who know me, including those who presumably love me. I could give many examples, but by far the strangest one of all occurred a few years ago when a youngish man whom I’d never seen before and have never seen since approached me in the grocery store to tell me that I was one of the most beautiful women he had ever seen. I was stunned, because it had been several decades since anyone had told me I was beautiful. The man didn’t seem mentally ill, or creepy, or delusional, or anything else that would explain his extraordinary behavior, so I have to assume that he meant it. Apparently he saw something in me that no one else — including me — could see.

Yes. A lot of strangers have said my eyes are nice, my hair is nice, and they like the shirt I am wearing!
