Most things that may irk me a little, I would let go of. But when someone makes you the target of cruel lies, malicious slander, completely false gossip designed to tear your reputation to shreds – well, yeah, that kind of gets under my skin!!!
The only insults that hit their mark are the ones based on truth. When you live with the same person for a hundred years or so it makes you a sitting duck, of course – because that person knows far too much. So a good marriage relies upon keeping such knowledge buried somewhere. It’s a sort of mutual blackmail arrangement.

I have always had a policy of tearing my own reputation to threads in front of people. It renders them powerless and is actually quite liberating.
