This evening, I was dragged down a rabbit-hole against my will.
Well, that’s not totally true. Noone pressed a gun against my temple to force me to go on TikTok, and watch a short (obviously) video about how pigeons apparently suck at making nests.
Said video had absolutely no scientific fact to back that blunt statement against flying rats, and that’s why I went on to do my own (pretty shallow) research with the help of my good friend, Google.
Even if I live in a city where they are as common as squirels and people who think they are much cooler than they really are, I had never given a thought about pigeons’ nests…
Then again, I doubt that pigeons wonder what my apartment looks like, so we’re even.
Well, we were. Because I did check out if their skills were as bad as The Internets wanted me to believe… And I kid you not, I’ve seen more pictures than you should ever.
The good news is that if you’ve ever felt like you failed in ANY aspect of your life, pigeons are there to lift your spirit up! Don’t search it yourself, I’ve done the dirty job for you, Lovelies.
And here is my top six pick of different pigeon nesting styles!
.
1 – The artist
In my opinion (but I’ll let you judge for yourself), the hardest working type of pigeons… The intricacy of the building is forcing some kind of respect, even though I have little confidence that Mommy’s weight won’t make the whole thing collapse. And IF the nest does stay put, I can’t imagine how the offsprings could ever stay in it long enough before they are ready to fly on their own. But what do I know? I’m no pigeon, right?
.
2 – The basic thinker
If it looks like a nest and feels like a nest… I must be a nest, wouldn’t you say? This pigeon couple obviously thought that way and didn’t feel it necessary to actually ”build” a nest when there was one available in one of our backyards. Who could blame them?
.
3 – The minimalist
Hey! Comfort is obviously overrated nowadays. Take three tree branches, make the perfect triangle, and voilà! When you come to this world with the lowest expectations, you can only aim higher!
.
.
4 – The ”I tried my best” one
I’ll give it to them, these two love birds have put their hearts into building a nice nest for their little ones. Unfortunately, Mommy laid her eggs on the bare concrete, which cancels all the comforting efforts. Well tried!
.
5 – The environment friendly one
Is this a sign that not only us humans are aware of the horrible things we’ve done to our planet? I doubt that tie wraps will keep baby birds warm, but I have to give two thumbs up for the world caring parents. You rule, Mom and Dad!!
.
6 – The WTF one
I’m sorry but if you are willing to give birth in the middle of cigarette butts and cigars’ leftovers… You deserve nothing less. I do get that nobody’s going to search for a little bird in such a nasty nest (??!?) but still… COME ON!
.
Now you can make your own mind… Just keep in thought that I might have been influenced by AI (which scares me). But I’ll stay positive and think that pigeons are just poor nest builders.
And that feels good, because all birds can’t be good at this shit!
Can they?

Wow! You really captured the essence of poor nest building with your research! You are right, they kind of suck at it. Who knew???
