Life can be absurd.
Luckily, I’ve long gone past the stage of being shocked or annoyed by it. But sometimes, I just stop and think ”Really? I mean… Realllllly???”.
And tonight was no different.
Since early 2020, Chéri and I have been using our local online grocery shopping services. Week in and week out, we’ve been waiting for our delivery truck every Tuesday between 8 and 9PM. And usually, our food gets to the frontstep on time.
Last weekend, the 8 to 9PM time frame was unavailable, and I had to settle for the 9 to 10PM one. No big deal, really. Not as if we were early birds that needed to be tucked in bed by sunset.
But…. Fast forward to this evening, I was trying to relax, after solving some last minute work issues (thank you technology, for allowing us to be constantly connected, especially with the people you work with – Me being ironic?? Not at all). When I suddenly spotted one of our grocery shop’s truck parked a couple of buildings away, on our street.
It was 8:15PM.
I waited a little (about 15 minutes), hoping the delivery person would contact us to see if it was ok to come a bit early, or even show up without notice.
Nope. The truck stayed there, with warning lights on as it was parked in the middle of the (major) street. And I wondered and pondered about walking out of our apartment and knocking on the truck’s side window to say ”I know you’re a little early, but we’re ready for our groceries!”.
But I got shy, and went for the easy way out: calling our grocery shop’s customer service line. I thought they’d be glad to know that their driver was taking an easy 45 minutes break. ”You’re driver is taking care of other deliveries, which explains the delay” the girl said at the other end of the line. ”Nope, I can see the truck from my window, and he’s been there for 15 minutes” I replied.
Silence…
After checking, (working in a calling center myself, I am guessing she just wanted to get ready to tell me the truth, knowing how absurd it was) she came back online and informed me that it was the company’s policy not to show up before time, when deliveries were ahead of schedule.
I was flabbergasted, but hid it well.
Since when do we need to aim for lower targets? And appologize for doing better than expected?
Companies say they’re doing everything to be more efficient…. LOL, just LOL
Companies don’t give a dang. Or do they? Prove me wrong, please.
Some people may not like their deliveries to be early

Do they only schedule 1 delivery per hour? Drivers must spend a lot of time sitting around.
