Living independently. That is, it’s not that much society (in the sense of random strangers) that expects me to, but certain professionals, including those in positions of power, definitely used to. My family, too.
When I was little I was told “Little girls should be seen and not heard” I brought my daughter up to disobey that and I have lived my life speaking up and speaking out and I am still doing it. I turned 73 yesterday and I’ll be damned if I’m going to be quiet and just be seen as an old woman in the corner!
Oh all sorts – living life around the dictates of the commercial system is something that I just don’t do. I don’t want them to tell me what to buy at certain times of year. I have a lot of family, and we have chosen to use our money wisely and not go along with all these holidays that the retail industry try to make lots of money from.
There are a lot of things about “society” that I find extremely questionable. But I live closely to the timeless principles I have been taught since childhood. If society wishes to abandon that wisdom and go its own way…then I hope the cliff-top fall that awaits is not going to hurt too much.
We have the records in museums of how the societies that developed within successive empires – and the same pattern reoccurs over and over – once they start to do well materially and luxuries start to abound, then morals decline, family life deteriorates, selfishness, greed, shocking entertainment….and as a society descended into poorer behaviour and despicable attitudes, they often crumbled and were conquered by a rising force. And….the next world empire fell to the same pattern.
The fabric of society, the foundation of it, can be degrading from within – like dry rot – and a divisive issue arises – that interior damage is revealed.
To be open to romance/dating even after all my disasters. Even friends/family say, well, you never know. Actually, I do know, and so… no thanks!
