At 5 – I wanted to be a farmer’s wife
At 6 – I wanted to be a carpenter
At 7 – I wanted to be a sculpture (I actually meant a sculptor, but I only found that out later)
At 8 – I wanted to be a life-guard (I think Baywatch was popular back then)
At 9 – I wanted to be a bunjee jumping instructor
At 10 – I wanted to be a canoe instructor
At 11 – I wanted to be a deep sea diver
At 12 – I wanted to be an archaeologist
At 13 – I wanted to be a singer (I had private singing lessons)
At 14 – I wanted to be an actress (I started attending theatre school)
By the age of 15 I was working for a record company and wanted to escape (like proper run for the hills this is dreadful!) But I had no idea what I wanted to be! My teacher decided journalist – but I did not want that myself.
At the age of 16 – I walked onto my first construction site as a volunteer. I fell madly in love with the other volunteers, the atmosphere and it was wonderful to learn all sorts of new skills. And what a sense of purpose and love.
Every paid job has been for just a few hours a week to earn my bread and butter and allow me to spend most of my time as a volunteer.
First it was a beautician (these days they’re called ‘cosmetologists’ I believe, second (and longest) it was a librarian, then an anesthesiologist, then a cartoonist and finally a journalist. I achieved none of these.
A singer. My #1 dream!

I have wanted to be a few things that I have actually become. I havenβt become very good at being those things, for the most part, unfortunately.
