As you might know, I don’t usually risk myself when it comes to political issues.

Simply because I am clever enough to recognize that I don’t know enough about it to give my opinion. There are so many other things to talk about anyway, right?

But today, I can’t stay silent.

Tonight, Ottawa (our federal capital) is being flooded with thousands of angry people. You might have heard about the so-called ”Freedom Convoy” online, and I am guessing that the parliament siege footage will go viral all around the world.

But if you allow me, let’s just go back a little, so you understand the truth behind this mess.

When the ground Canada-US border re-opened, a while back, both countries made it mandatory to be fully vaccinated to cross it. Truck drivers got a special permission, to make sure that deliveries continued normally.

In November of 2021, both the US and Canadian governments agreed that the permission should be lifted, and truck drivers had until January 15th to get vaccinated, otherwise, they couldn’t drive across the border anymore.

In all honesty, I wasn’t following the news much arround that date, but I am guessing that the unvaccinated truck drivers (mind you, they only represent about 10 to 12% of all drivers) thought that the government would take a step back, if they stood their ground.

As much as we’re all grateful for the work these men and women do, the government just can’t please everybody that throws a tantrum, and the mandate wasn’t lifted.

Things started to heat up.

An all-across-Canada convoy was arranged, and truckers from every corner of the country agreed to meet in Ottawa this weekend. With their trucks. And to keep the parliament under siege, until Justin Trudeau would lift the mandate.

Up to this point, I didn’t really mind what was happening. I didn’t agree, but we do live in Canada and have freedom of speech and freedom to protest. So be it. Fine. It didn’t seem very environment-friendly, but I got that driving a couple of thousand eighteen-wheeler trucks into the capital would certainly be impressive. But useless… Since, even if, by some sad miracle, Justin Trudeau did decide to lift the mandate, the US would still not allow unvaccinated drivers on their side of the border.

But then, shit hit the fan (forgive my French).

All kinds of people started using the ”Freedom Convoy” to make all kinds of claims, going from ”I don’t want to wear masks anymore” to ”I need to save my children’s future”. Thousands and thousands of Joe Blows, decided to march to Ottawa to let the government know how unhappy they are (as if the rest of us had enjoyed the last two years, because, you know, we’re just sheep!).

And as it always goes, when a big protest is on its way, extremist groups also got interested, and by noon today, downtown Ottawa was flooded with what looks like hundred of thousands of angry people saying they want to protest peacefully, with clanched teeth.

They say they want their freedom back. They say they want the tyranny to end.

What tyranny?? They obviously forgot that we voted last September to elect our Prime Minister. Last September… Not three years ago, when we were still riding unicorns and carelessly wandering outside as if it was safe! Nooo! Straight in the middle of this pandemic. The people spoke, and obviously, even if we don’t all love Justin Trudeau, he was the one we trusted the most with running the country.

They say they want all sanitary mandates to be lifted. No more masks, no more social distancing, no more vaccine passport…

Don’t all these men and women remember that all of these are ruled by their provincial governments? Even if Mr. Trudeau wanted to, he just can’t magically grant them the mandate lifts they are asking for…

Oh, and just on a side-note, (as if there wasn’t already enough to rant about) many of these people chose to bring their children to the protest. I don’t have kids of my own, and it seems obvious to me that I would NEVER bring a child to what will probably be the biggest protest of the country, ever. Do I have exceptionnal parenting skills, that I am just wasting by not raising any offspring?

And the funny thing is that this jolly good gang really thinks that it is speaking for the whole country. Or at least the majority of it… Because that’s how democracy works, right? If the majority is against something, it is just common sense that the government should pay attention to their cry out.

I don’t have the numbers, but I’ll be fair, and I’ll use an estimation I’ve seen online (which I consider is generous on my side, since it comes from the protesters, and of course, they want to make the event look as big as possible!). Ok, so let’s say that there are 1.5 million people protesting right now.

And you know what, I’ll be super fair, and I’ll double that, because there are probably a lot of people who just couldn’t make it to Ottawa, or just didn’t want to get out in the -40 C cold… So 3 million Canadian citizens, wanting to go back to ”normal” life despite the risks, and willing to let our hospitals explode with new covid cases…

Ok, I really wouldn’t want to seem like I want to play with numbers, so let’s double that, making it 6 million people sharing the protesters’ views.

Well, I am sorry, but that’s roughly 15% of the Canadian population.

But I have to say, I have to thank them for the extremely annoying past 2 days. Because I honestly never felt so Canadian in the past. My blood boils, and I hope that Mr Trudeau and his government will not give them a fecking crumble of a favor.

And if I had the time, energy, and exposure to do it, I’d invite the silent majority of us Canadians to stand up. Wouldn’t it be wonderful, if we just did something significant to show our leaders that since March of 2020, we’ve been careful, obedient and quiet? Not because we’re sheep, but because we were grateful to live in a country that took care of us to the best of its knowledge.

I am really tired to see the minority put words in my mouth.

If you are Canadian, and feel like me, please speak up! If you have Canadian friends you think feel the same, please invite them to read this…

Because the minority speaks louder doesn’t mean they are right… Let’s show them that we have a voice too!

P.S. Late tonight, I’ve seen pictures taken in Ottawa, of Confederate and Nazi flags flying in the air. If that’s not a red flag (pun intended), what is??

Oh there’s really no need to appologize, Fandango 😉 I think there has always been, and there is always going to be a small percentage of the Canadian population willing to complain about how they feel robbed of their precious freedom. But watching the massive outdoor rave that went on all night long in Ottawa last night, I just had to speak up. There is a big difference between a right and a priviledge, and some people don’t understand that.

      On a serious note, I think that the protest is going to last all day long, but tomorrow, most of the Joe Blows will go back to their usual errands, and only the truckers will remain on site. Which is fine by me. They have a precise cause, which I don’t agree with. But they are free to fight for it. As long as the ”siege” remains peaceful.

  5. Sorry, the Covidiots are taking over Canada too. Or trying too. I really don’t get their logic. Do we soon start going over red lights because it restricts us and our freedom of choice? Common sense is truly dead and these ppl might be soon too. At least here in the UK the hospitals are full with non-vaccinated who caught Covid and now regret not being vaccinated. I think it’s about 90% of all Covid cases in hospital. Sigh. Sending you positive vibes 🤗

      I really don’t know what more to say… I get that some people are more tired of all of what we’ve been going through for the past two years, but claiming that we were robbed of our freedom because of temporary measures… It is beyond me.

    I respectfully disagree. Canada, Australia Europe, and the US have violated our personal liberties, and used their proxies in the media to shut down debate. Science was never supposed to be about consensus, but rather about debate. It’s sad to see so many otherwise thoughtful people not fighting back against this censorship. As a vaccinated person, who was promised to return to normal after the jabs, found the specter of up to 4 jabs with little consideration for natural immunity, a lie. I refuse to show my vax card to anyone. Whatever happened to HIPPA laws?

    I won’t give any government a pass, since altruism is rarely in their lexicon.

    1. Thanks for sharing your thoughts Rob. I will not comment on what has happened or is happening in the US, since I am not an American. But as a Canadian, I just can’t see any so-called violation of my liberties. Yes, many temporary measures have been put in place, and I should know because Québec had the strictest, of all of Canada. But I believe that the concept of freedom is slightly different on both sides of the border (my Canadian fellows are welcome to correct me, if they don’t feel the same).

      I do agree with you that governments are not completely altruistic, but I sincerely don’t think that ours is working in secret against the Canadian people. I might be wrong, time only will tell.

      My point, in this post, was to remind people in general of the silent majority. Because the protest that is taking place does ”look” impressive, but it is just a small percentage of the Canadians’ opinion. It just seems fair that the people who agree (and I want to be clear, I don’t enjoy them, but I do believe that it is the way to eventually come back to a safe ”normal” life) with the sanitary measures that our government has put in place, have a voice too.

  7. To the commenter above: I always laugh at people who whine about ‘freedom’ and ‘personal liberty’ when you don’t actually have any. Don’t believe me? Try going into Walmart without pants on. Try driving a transport truck without a license. Try building a house without a permit. Try being homeless and living in a tent city in Toronto. Every time you step outside your door (and even within your own house) you’re subject to thousands of rules, laws, guidelines and mandates that are part of a social contract that a) protects you from yourself and more importantly b) protects the rest of us from you. So stop bitching about vaccines, dumbass. Sorry, Cyranny. I’m just fed up with these covidiots. Confederate flags, Nazi flags, defacing the Terry Fox monument–it’s disgusting.

  8. While I am on the opposite end of the political spectrum as you – I’m fairly conservative (to the point I think Texas should secede from the US) with the exception of abortion access and LGBTQ+ rights – I agree with you on a couple of things.

    I don’t think kids should be brought to protests. Dr. Phil always said don’t involve kids in adult issues. I agree with this statement. They’re too young to understand.

    I also agree that Nazi flags have no place in a peaceful protest. That’s taking it way too far.

    I am unjabbed and will remain so. I have my own logical, well-thought out reasons for this decision. I trust everyone has the ability to make the best decision for themselves. I do not agree with government mandates on any personal health decision (up to and including suicide – I believe that’s an individual right also), I agree this demonstration has taken things way too far. Despite being on polar opposite ends of the political spectrum, I can appreciate the common ground we share concerning the goings on in Ottawa.

      I really have nothing against the people who are protesting this weekend. They have their opinion and I have mine. They are absolutely free to protest.

      It is just the ”where” and the ”how” that bothers me greatly.

      The ”where” because all the non-truckers are asking for mandate lifts that are not under the federal government power. It just doesn’t make sense to bark under the wrong tree, and it doesn’t serve the truckers’ cause.

      The ”how” because of all the kids dragged into a potentially uncontrollable crowd. Because of the extremist flags, and because of certain things that happened (like some protesters breaking into a charity that feeds the homeless and agressively tried to get food for them, because the restaurants wouldn’t let them in unmasked).

  9. I’m on the side of the protesters. We are now headed into Year 3 of “15 days to slow the spread” and still there’s no end in sight. The government has mishandled the epidemic from the get-go, and in the process has made things exponentially worse. Covid is here to stay and we need to learn to live with it. Anyone who wants to wear a mask and get boosted every few months and isolate themselves from the rest of the world will still be free to do so, but those of us who are not afraid of a cold virus with a better-than-99% survival rate and don’t care to take an experimental drug should be allowed to live our lives.

      I think that we are all equally tired of this situation. It’s been a long two years for everybody, regardless the way we think about it. I am fairly optimistic, and I think that the worst is behind us. But I can’t agree to go to full ”normal” life just yet.

But if masks and vaccines actually work, then anyone who is masked and vaccinated has nothing to fear from those of us who are not, and bureaucratic bullies should stop trying to force us to take the jab and wear the mask. I get your point, and here’s where I disagree… (I just want to point out, before I start, that I am talking from my Canadian point of view… I can’t give my opinion as to how people should handle things in the States.) If it was just for me, I’d gladly let anyone who wishes to, go back to a completely normal life. I am not afraid of covid, because I would just continue using what I am using now to keep my boyfriend and I from catching it. And I am aware that if I caught it, it probably wouldn’t be all that bad (not sure about my boyfriend, but we won’t go there).

        The problem, in my opinion, is that our hospitals are still filled with covid patients. And we’re not done with Omicron yet. If tomorrow, everybody was allowed to go back to pre-covid life, a LOT of people would catch the disease. Of course, most of them would only get flu-like symptoms, but the small percentage of very ill people would flood our already struggling health system.

        On the bright side, the numbers are slowly going down these days, and the mandates are gradually loosening up. I really hope that it keeps going that way, and that soon, people that feel like it, will have a totally normal life, while some people like me, will probably keep being a little extra cautious, just in case.

        But hey, just my opinion… Nobody can tell what the future holds, right?

      3. Hospitals in the U.S. are not overwhelmed and have not been for a very long time, and few people who get Omicron end up in the hospital anyway. For most people, it’s no worse than the kind of seasonal colds we all get from time to time. The only people who are at risk from Covid are the exact same people who have always been at risk during cold and flu season, which is why it never made any sense to handle this epidemic differently than we have handled past ones. Epidemics are a fact of life, always have been, always will be, and you can’t shut the entire country down every time one comes along.

And when I hard they were going to camp out in front of the parliament buildings my first thought was……will Ottawa have to provide porta-potties for these people? Thank you Anne 🙂 I know that a lot of the previous comments disgressed a bit, but my first and foremost reason for publishing this post, was to speak for the majority that puts up with the temporary measures, without complaining… And only late tonight did I remember that the (about) 10 to 12% unvaccinated truck drivers are not forbidden to cross the border (they can cross it, both ways, but they have to quarantine… But that’s beside the point). So they still can work within the Canadian territory (which is quite vast, to say the least).

  12. While I, one who’s taken three Covid-19 shots, bascially believe mainstream COVID vaccine science, I’m still cautious of inadvertently following what I call speculative ($$$) science.

    Due to increasingly common privatized research for corporate profit aims, even ‘scientific fact’, to a concerning degree, is for sale. Research results, however flawed, can and are known to be publicly amplified if they favor the corporate product, and accurate research results can be suppressed if they are unfavorable to business interests, even when involving human health.

    Health Canada (our version of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration) was established to act in Canadian consumers’ best interests yet is susceptible to corporate lobbyist manipulation. For one thing, it allowed novelty-flavored vaping products to be fully marketed — even on corner stores’ candy counters — without conclusive independent scientific proof that the product, as claimed by the tobacco industry, would not seriously harm consumers but rather help nicotine addicts wean themselves off of the more carcinogenic cigarette means of nicotine deliverance.

    A few years before that, Health Canada had sat on its own research results that indicated seatbelts would save lives and reduce injury; it wanted even more proof of safety through seatbelts before ordering big bus manufacturers to install them in every bus. To me, those examples smell of science-be-damned lobbyist manipulation — something that should not prevail in a government body established primarily, if not solely, to protect consumers’ safety and health rather than big businesses’ monetary concerns.

    1. I can’t imagine what that impression that would give in Europe… But even here, I believe that such symbols should immediatly raise a red flag. Some of the protesters mentionned that there were only ”a few” Nazi supporters among them… In my opinion, one is too many already.

  15. I totally agree with you. I live in Saskatchewan and am sick to death of people who are constantly whining and fighting for ‘their’ rights. It is obvious that they do not give a tinkers damn about anyone else’s. I am sick of bullies in big trucks or massive farm equipment clogging up highways (in January no less) and creating havoc in town and cities. There is nothing peaceful in, or about, their protests. Any mandates that have been put in place have been to protect people from serious illness and to protect our very fragile health system. I appreciate that most governments in Canada (federal, provincial, and municipal) have worked to control Covid as well as they have.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts, Anne Marie 🙂 I must say that your opinion comforts me a lot since the ”Anti-everything” Canadian movement seems to be much more active in Western Canada, while the most restrictive measures taken seem to be here, in the Eastern part of the country. I totally agree with you, and though I don’t enjoy the restrictions any more than anybody else, I do believe that we are being more patriotic than people that just want their comfort back. As I mentionned in my post, I have never been so proudly a Canadian in my life before (as you probably know, us Quebecois usually put Québec first… But this protest really made me connect with my all over the country Canadian fellows). I was raised to be Canadian, so it does not sit well with me that our current premier and so many of his followers are so rabidly anti-everything Canadian. (You have no idea. 🤦). Take care💞

    However, you are being hypocritical in your comment re being polite you know.     Mydangblog is being arrogant and does him or her no credit. Calling The V Pub a dumbass is very silly when Mydangblog is just ignoring the blatantly obvious data around re vaccine,s and their utter pointlessness I will explain if I may.

    I have had my fair share of vaccines, including polio I believe. I used to think vaccines were of some use until, at 60 years of age in 2020, I researched properly. I changed my mind.

    Covid 19 is the ‘flu, dressed up as a monster to scare people, re-branded if you will. This helps big pharma etc, control the populace and make more money.

    The ‘flu is the internal toxicosis of the body, mainly via urea, partly due to metabolism of food and partly due to the many poisons in our environment which can and do enter our bodies in the air, food and water. The ‘flu cannot be transmitted to someone else as it is individual to each person.

    Unless your blood is given to someone in a blood transfusion, for example.

    Injecting poisons such as via vaccines merely adds to the toxicosis problem. Vaccines have never been of any use, it is merely that constant and persistent ‘advertising’ persuaded people that they were of use. The various deaths and harm have been well-documented over the decades. It is being documented now.

    Vitamin D deficiency is the true pandemic due to indoor working and living away from the sunshine which, if we do the right thing things, will give us vitamin D (free!). Big pharma etc. are not keen on free as they don’t make much money out of it.

    Vitamin D levels drop in the winter months due to reduced sunshine levels and as any gains in the summer months are depleted.

    Lack of vitamin D causes rickets among other things. Polio was merely rickets re branded again for big pharma to make money. The polio vaccine was pointless. A good dose of vitamin D such as was once given via cod liver oil in a spoon (a disgusting taste I understand). You can now get this in capsule form of course.

    Vaccines are neuro-toxins, if there is anything in them at all, as are most big pharma drugs. Therefore they are at best pointless.

    If your immune system is in good order then by and large you will tolerate a poisonous vaccine. If weakened you will suffer various side effects. If your immune system is very poor you may die.

    Boosting your immune system with vitamin D can go a long way to protecting you against the toxicosis, but vitamin C is very good as an anti-oxidant to help flush the toxins out of your system. By and large you should be able to gain your vitamins etc from good, untainted food. Highly processed foods will not help.

    I have seen the statistics on Australia since February 2020. These show a close correlation between Covid cases and vaccination. It is abundantly clear the vaccines are causing the case numbers rise, as would be expected. Look at other statistics and you will no doubt see the same correlation. It is not rocket science.

    Fear is the Key

    It should be noted that fear tends to ‘freeze’ the body’s immune system from functioning correctly and can stop people doing sensible things. Like avoiding having foreign bodies injected into their systems.

    And I wonder how many people would choose to have a vaccine if they had to pay for them directly rather than via their taxes (vaccination is not free)?

    As regards vaccinated/unvaccinated I gather the goal posts keep changing so unvaccinated currently means not fully vaccinated. This means people who have had vaccines are lumped in with those who have not had recent vaccines.

    Unless they like playing Russian roulette with their bodies of course. But then that is both sad and mad.

    As regards reasons of variance of symptoms, if any, between those who are vaccinated the problem lies in not knowing what exactly in each vial; sadly people will sell nothing for something and the vial might contain only saline, it is impossible to tell without testing each vial.

    Please note I do use humour as necessary on posts and pages to lighten the mood and help make the points.

  18. It is so great to hear a genuine viewpoint from Canada. I am totally sick of anti-vaxers and those of their ilk. I think you are very fair. Unfortunately the situation in Canada is being deliberately inflamed. I do agree with you. We need to hear more from the vast majority of Canadians, rather than a small disruptive minority.

All I Wil say is the covidiots who jumped on board for the trucker convoy are the same morons who are now telling us that the war in Ukraine is not happening and in some circles praising Putin. If democracy is such an a front to this people maybe they should consider moving somewhere where there freedom really means nothing.
