If two people you care for are fighting, do you try to step in, as the referee, or do you stay out of it?

  1. There is no right or wrong answer to this and there is probably no definite answer. As to so many of life’s questions, the response is disappointingly “It Depends”. Would I? Sometimes yes and sometimes no. Sometimes the right decision is to walk away and sometimes it is the worst thing to do. Follow your instincts and accept that you may get it wrong… That’s life.

  2. Stay out of it. Nothing good comes from poking your nose in, even when asked. Inevitably someone gets angry at you. It’s not worth it.

But if they’re willing to do it in public, I have no problem grabbing something to drink and pop some popcorn and watch the show!

  3. Are you kidding??? Never ever referee in other people’s disputes. Even the most casual observer of sport would realise that, at the end of the match, the most likely person to be attacked by the crowd is the referee. Ask any police officer about dealing with domestic dispute – 9 times out of 10 both parties turn against the very person who stepped in to limit the bloodshed.

  4. It depends on the degree of “fighting”. If they are having a difference of opinion and expressing that, I would stay out of it. But if there is behaviour that becomes abusive, I would intervene. I would generally suggest they take a walk, have some fresh air, calm down, and then if they really struggle to control their emotions perhaps sit and write down their thoughts.
