Are you an introvert or an extrovert?

And the answer to that question is: Absolutely!

Most people can tell straigh forward if they are more of an introvert or an extrovert. And I am pretty sure most of you, fellow bloggers would lean to the introvert side. It seems logical to me, since writers live in a world of their own, and don’t mind spending time on their own at all…

I did a little research, and came to the conclusion that I am an ambivert. I don’t think I had ever seen that word before today.

am·bi·vert
/ˈambəˌvərt/
noun

PSYCHOLOGY
  1. a person whose personality has a balance of extrovert and introvert features.

But funnily, it depends on the time of the week, or the time of the year…

During my week of work, and quite honestly most of the year, I act more as an introvert. I prefer to stay away from other people. I feed on quiet time. I become very discreet and keep from interaction with others as much as I can.

When I am off, or on vacation, my mood switches. I like to mingle, I enjoy meeting new people, I am very outspoken and open to pretty much any adventure that comes my way.

I’m complicated, I know.

I am a hermit wannabe, but I enjoy the company of other people…

Some people are probably convinced that I am terribly shy and reserved, while others remember me as an outspoken and very friendly person…

I work very well on my own, but I think I can be a great teammate…

I guess I’m a little of this, and a little of that.

An ambivert, or a character chameleon, if you will!

That’s me.

  1. I’ve heard that term before. You are a good balance! I may have some ambivert tendencies but definitely lean towards introvert. IRL, people can be exhausting sometimes. 😁

    1. Hahahahaha I agree, they can… sometimes 😉

Here’s a good example of my ambivertism… A friend decides to throw a party (we’re talking pre-covid times, of course) and I’ll spend weeks trying to find a good excuse not to go. I’ll end up going, to be nice, have an a-w-e-s-o-m-e time, and end the night telling my friend we have to do this again soon! LOL

  2. I’m very much an introvert. Per Myers-Briggs, I normally test as an INFJ, occasionally an INTJ and rarely an ISTJ. Being on the autism spectrum, most of us are introverts.

  3. I’ve never heard that word either, but it fits. When I was young – up to about 14-15 years old I stuttered bad. I hated to talk in school and at home. Kids at school laughed and my dad made fun of me. There were a few people I could talk to without stuttering, very few.

In my junior year, a kid was telling a stutter joke. When I told him he was doing it wrong and retold the joke myself, everyone laughed, including me. Whatever happened that instant of laughter caused my stutter to go away.

When I graduated from college and got my first real job, I painfully learned I had to fight for myself or never advance thru the supervision ranks of a hard core union shop. I got my ass chewed for being “to passive” with the union many times. After one nasty talk with my boss, and the possible loss of my job, “I grew a pair”. My attitude went from get along to take names, kick ass and ask questions later. It served me well.

Now, I mingle, listen and chose my extrovert activities carefully. If I hear negative trash and bull shit I’ll leave. If I hear something positive and interesting, I’ll join in and express myself.

So, yeah I’m an ambivert – the hard way.

  4. I am very much an ambivert too.. and for me, it depends upon the kind of people I am with. With my people, I am totally relaxed and can’t shut up enough, while with new people, I’m pretty reserved. Enjoed reading your post!!

  5. I took the meyers briggs test a couple of years back and I’m introverted but with extroverted behavious. Apparently this comes from the fact that naturally I’m an inttovert but life has forced me to be a bit extroverted too… I’m weird.

  6. I took the Myers-Briggs personality test and discovered that I am:
Your energy style is Extraversion (in contrast with Introversion).
This dimension describes how you manage your energy.
    Your Energy Style:
    Enthusiastic
    Gregarious
    Sociable
    Expressive
I remember when I saw this I was a little hmmmmmmm for I always described myself as an introvert. Until I realized no I am like this I just know that I need to have my down time to decompress and recenter myself after being with people or around people all day. I learned a lot about myself from the test. And so much of it was bang on that it is scary. Have a great day. 🙂

  7. Having recently returned from the US, I was required to spend 14 days in isolation. I was given a dispensation such that unlike other returning Australians, who are required to isolate in a hotel under supervision, I was allowed to isolate at home. For other reasons it was deemed advisable that I remain clear of the house and instead stay in the shed (we have a fairly big shed) for the duration.
I was discussing this with a friend beforehand and she said, “Gee! Two weeks! How are you going to handle that?” before looking at me more closely as if recognising me for the first time, after which she added, “Oh. That’s right, it’s you. You won’t even notice, will you?”

And she was right. For 14 days and nights I didn’t, for all intents and purposes, see another person, talk to another person, and certainly didn’t touch another person. It was bliss. The time flew by.. I as very reluctant to emerge back out into the light and into the world.

    So, yeah.
    List me as an introvert.
