As you might know by now, I love to travel with just a backpack.  It has a great deal of advantages, but it has its down side too.

Bringing souvenirs back quickly gets tricky.

Unless you are willing to leave some of your clothes behind, and even if you are a Tetris champion, there’s just so many things that will fit in your bag in the end. Sad, I know… Especially when you are me, visiting Denmark for the first time in May of 2016.

During this first trip, I wanted to bring back pretty much everything I came across. I especially wanted to buy books (and dictionaries) which had no chance of happening. I had to find meaningful things, that were definately Danish, weighed almost nothing and took as little place as possible.

In Odense, I visited a museum dedicated to Hans Christian Andersen. I already knew many of the famous Danish writer’s fairy tales, but very little about the character or his life… I fell in love with Hans Christian and his troubled journey on Earth.

The little museum boutique sold gift cards that caught my eye. The stylish inked drawings winked at Hans’ most famous fairy tales, and each featured a simple Danish word. (easy enough that I understood all of them even if this was my first visit to Vikingland)

I bought four of them, with an idea in the back of my mind. I slipped them in one of my backpack pockets, and brought them home, thinking Chéri wouldn’t mind me hanging them on one of our walls, since they were only obviously Danish for people who know Denmark pretty well. (I am well aware that too many Danish flags would mean Chéri using his veto against my apartment decoration)

I had the drawings framed, and I must say, I’m happy with the result. I think they look pretty cool, and needless to say, they are unique compared to the average Montréal living room decoration.
