To the very top…

”Dreams are illustrations… from the book your soul is writing about you.”

Marsha Norman

Just two weeks ago, I was discovering the breathtaking majesty of the Grampians with Miriam and her awesome husband. One of the adventures they had planned for us was to hike our way up to a summit called ”The Pinnacle”.

Although by no means the most difficult path available in the area, climbing this mountain was quite a challenge for my sissy legs. Not long after beginning to make our way up, my legs started to beg for me to stop and head back down.

I was panting, and slowing down the pack, but everybody was very comprehensive (or overly polite) and I decided to ignore my burning muscles because, hey! I wanted to make it to the top.

I really really wanted to.

Many times, I wondered if I would manage to make it. But I kept on going, taking pauses (pretending to take pictures, while I was catching my breath) and after what felt like an eternity, we reached the pinnacle, and Miriam took the above picture.

Victory never feels sweeter than when you had to (literally) sweat out your life to get it. As much as I hurt during the ascension, the view from the top was worth every step I had taken. If I had the chance to re-live that day, I’d do it all again.

I think that the same goes for any kind of dream we have in our lives. The main reason we don’t chase them is not because these dreams are out of reach, but because we are afraid. Afraid that it will take too long, afraid that it will need too many sacrifices, afraid that people will turn us down, or make fun of us for trying.

And I want to believe that if I keep that fear away, my dreams will continue to come true.

So… Today I wrote to a magazine offering myself for a collaboration of some sort. Their publications travel all around the world, and the company running the magazine is widely known. I am aware that hoping they’ll even consider writing back to decline my offer is quite cocky, but I had to do it anyway.

I decided that some of my words would someday travel on paper. And they will. Maybe not this time, but if I don’t try, my only certitude will be that it won’t work.

And this will work… Sooner or later.

I’ll get to the top of this mountain too. Mark my words!

  1. Of course you will! And there’s absolutely nothing cocky about what you’re doing and pitching your writing to a magazine. Go for it! You climbed that mountain girl, you can do anything! Fingers crossed. P.S Sorry for the sore muscles ☺️

  2. Great article my friend. You are not being cocky at all with your offer. A high school team mate of mine told me it’s not being cocky if you can really do what you claim.
I’m a newbie at trying to start a free lance business. Everytime I get to a new critical point I hear that “you can’t do that” voice in my head. So far I’ve kept pushing thru it but it’s tough. Good luck to you.

  5. Cyranny, Please forgive me for the multiple post.  My phone was doing all kinds of crazy stuff – I couldn’t tell if anything got thru. So very sorry for the mix up. Larry Hoke

  6. Of course you can do it. If not this time then the next. Or the next. Never give up.

I’ll be unemployed before too long and looking for another gig that takes less toll on my body (you know what I do now and hopefully understand that it’s not a recipe for longevity) – but I have travelled a little bit and seen some things here and there … maybe I should write some travel stuff.

I suspect that you might do it better than me, though.

    Keep trying.

  8. When I was in Montreal, I tried to get to the top of Mount Royal, but try as I might, just couldn’t make it all the way. That Pinnacle climb would have killed me for sure. Kudos to you for making it! (And good luck with that submission.)
