B like Bagenkop – A to Z Challenge

One thing I absolutely love about Denmark, is the fact that it is such a small country, that you are always just a short ride away from a city, or in this case, total wilderness.

Bagenkop is a small village at the tip of Langeland. Most travel guides won’t even bother telling you about it, because quite frankly, there is nothing touristic about the place. If what you like about traveling is to enjoy big cities’ life, architecture and shopping, forget about Bagenkop.

But if you want to get in touch with nature, this is THE place for you!

I found Bagenkop when a friend mentionned that this part of Langeland had a park where wild horses could be seen. Wild horses? As in untamed, running free horses? Yes, indeed, and it was enough of a reason to take my bus ticket to Bagenkop.

From Bagenkop Station, you have two choices. To head towards the village, or away from it. The choice was easy for me, but I did my homework in case you’d prefer the other way around.

Bagenkop is mainly a fishing harbour. Probably due to its remoteness, it is one of the places where the use of English was the least helpful. Which is not something to overlook if you don’t speak Danish at all.

An exhibition presents the fishermen’s history through time, in the village. You can also visit the cold war museum, and a golf course is waiting for you, about 9km away from the center of the little town. (Come to think about it, it is the first time I notice a golf course through my travels in Denmark)

If you wish to stay overnight, you won’t have to make heartcrushing choices. Bagenkop Kro is the best (ok… the only) Inn in town. It is said to serve delicious seafood, but you’ll have to tell me, because I haven’t been there, myself.

But I didn’t come to Bagenkop for the fish… I came for the horses.

From the station, it is a good walk to the park, but an enjoyable one. Quickly the straw roofed houses get farther and farther from each other, and soon the only signs of modern society are the huge white windmills here and there, in the fields.

And before you know it, you get swallowed by Nature.

There are several trails in the natural park, but I recommend taking the path that follows the cliffs along the sea shore. Between the sound of the wind in the tall trees, and the breaking of the waves on the pebble beach, downhill…  If you don’t feel alive, nothing will make you!

The park itself would be worth the bus ride to Bagenkop, but the special thing about it is the presence of wild horses.

By definition, wild horses are free. They are not performing any show, and they are not there to entertain. So there is no guarantee you’ll get to see them. The access to the park doesn’t cost a dime, so there is no one to complain to, if the horses shy away, when you come to see them.

And that is exactly what makes it so very special, when you finally spot one walking over a hill. And then two… And when you spot the whole herd, running freely, it doesn’t matter at all, that your legs are soar from all the walking.

  1. Absolutely breathtaking! Due to my disorder and myriad of phobias, I’ll likely never travel to all of the places I’d LOVE to see. Though I can live them through my dear much more worldly adventurous friends. Great post♥️

    1. Thank you Bella 🙂 It’s too bad that life as it is keeps you from traveling, if that’s something you’d like to do… But if I can help by showing you places I have been to, and places I want to visit, that makes my day! I’ll try to make it as entertaining as possible 🙂

      1. Please do!! I’d love to be able to just hop on a plane and backpack places like that, staying in hostels and writing, writing, writing. I have Irish heritage along with the Italian. My brother went to Ireland and said he was hard pressed to return home. He said it was amazingly beautiful and EVERYONE he met was awesome.

      2. I’ve never been to Ireland yet, but my parents also told me that it has some of the most breathtaking sceneries… I sure hope to go see that for myself someday 🙂

    1. Awww, dear Lady 🙂 Yes, I agree about the song! I didn’t think the video exactly did justice to Bagenkop, but the great sunset and the song won me over anyway… I hope you get to see the horses when you visit there, but believe me, even if you don’t get lucky, the walk will be well worth it anyway 🙂

    1. Such a pleasure, Joy! Some people would say ”hey, it’s just horses in a field!” But you can feel their freedom, and though I have nothing against ”tamed” horses, there’s something wonderful about the sight of these wild majestic animals 🙂

  7. Wow, gorgeous! I am curious as to what it is about the ledges, seems like they are carved out of a bigger landscape with the green on top. And your fascination with them? I’m nosy….🙄😳😄

Good question, Cheryl 😉 I do have a fascination for cliffs, and I never really thought about why… I guess it is just this ”I’m on top of the world” feeling you get when the salty sea winds blow in your face, and you are far above water-level…. Also, these white cliffs are so beautiful, wether you are at the top, looking at the beach below, or on the beach, looking up to this tall natural wall 🙂
