If the government offered to suspend all laws, and law enforcement for 24 hours, letting you (and everybody else) do whatever you wish… Would you be in favor of it, or not?
I am not the first blogger to start a ”Question of the day” series. I used to participate to Danny’s Let me ask you a question posts regularly, but since he has almost stopped pubishing them, I thought I’d give it a go. We’ll see if I stick to it, depending on the answers I get!
Not really, no. People are nuts, man. 🤪

Same here… I wouldn’t want to hurt or kill anyone, even in self defense. And I can’t trust all the weirdos out there, especially in a big city like Montréal. 😉

What really troubles me, is that although it seems obvious that it would be a bad idea, I am sure there would be lots of people in favor of it…

I used to love “Let me ask you a question?” by Danny.
However, I will play along with your questions now. 🤗
I honestly would not be in favor of it. It’s like that movie “The Purge” – That is some scary stuff, just allowing people to run a muck killing off other people for the heck of it.

I saw the movie this morning, and it is the reason for my question… I think that most people would say that they are against it, but I wonder who would change their mind if it was a real choice, and who would actively participate, if it happened… Scary, scary, very scary!!

The first time I saw it, that movie freaked me out. All i kept tinking was somebody, or a bunch of people were going to go through with this idea. Scared the daylights out of me.

Unfortunately, fiction is never so far from the reality… And I really hope we don’t cross that line, one day.

Something like what? Ignoring the law? Mouahahahaha Seriously, I see no problem in both doing it 🙂 Unless you want to fight it off, that could be fun too 😛

I ignore the law on a regular basis, I decided it didn’t apply to me :-p
I might do, I was going to set it up starting from tomorrow. Although I am debating the sort of questions, do I want to go serious, or silly or both

I’ll be checking your take on it… I’m sure it will be a success 🙂 Can’t wait to see what you’ll ask!
And don’t worry about laws… they were made for weak people 😛 LOL

Let’s not forget that, at one time, there were no laws and that, even now, laws are constantly changing. Laws are only there to formalise what people believe to be appropriate for the time. So, if laws were suspended for 24 hours most people would continue to abide by them anyway. Certainly those people would heavily outnumber those who chose the other direction.
Am I being overly (and uncharacteristically) optimistic about my fellow humans?
It’s hard to see anything positive from outlawing laws for a day, though. So let’s not.

I am, indeed, surprised to see such optimism coming from you, good Sir. And I think you are bringing a very good point that I hadn’t thought about. I agree that at first, the vast majority of people would just go on living their peaceful lives… But unfortunately, I think that the minority might push otherwise harmless people to do things they wouldn’t have thought about doing…
Then again, 24 hours is a short period of time 🙂
I agree, let’s just not try it! Thanks for your comment! xx

I made that comment this morning as the sun was rising on a promising Autumn day. By about 10AM I had endured several encounters with the public that had me thinking that, given a 24 hour amnesty on homicide, I could make the world a better place.
Nevertheless …. I do think that, overall, 99% of people can be relied upon to do the right thing. Sadly, the other 1% do a bewildering amount of bad. I met a few of them today.
But here’s a funny (though sad) story …. tonight I was at the local hospital where I had arranged to meet a doctor friend of mine in the casualty ward. The casualty ward in the place I live is like a human zoo after about 6PM. We walked past some poor soul (about 30 years old and clearly off his face) who was on a bed on all fours banging his head against a pillow and praying to some distant God for forgiveness.
“Mate,” my friend said to me as we walked past, “I saw that dude about 5 minutes ago. At first I mistook him for you. I imagined that you had finally cracked.”

I think I would lock and bolt the front door and barricade myself in – simply out of fear of how other people would behave!

the majority of us would think about doing “illegal” things but never act upon those thoughts. The ones who would actually break a law will do so whether it is a “law’ or not. be a useless exercise in government if you ask me….lol

Good point… But I think that giving ”carte blanche” to the bad people would push them to do even worse things that they would have dared doing… Luckily, I have already booked my safe place in the woods with Wayne. He’ll know where to hide me while the mean people are doing wrong things 😛

Definitely a “no” vote from me. Nothing good every comes from anarchy or chaos. We don’t have to look in very many places in the world to see examples of that.
On the other hand, I would be all in favor of a day in which we could flout social convention with impunity. For instance, I might just decide to wear brown shoes with my black slacks. Or some other bit of insanity like that. Beneath my conventional surface, I am obviously a wild man! 🙂

Hahahaha Biff, I love the idea. And I do think we should have a day like that every once in a while. It is a pity your wild side is being tamed by ”black on black” and ”brown on brown” rules 😉
You know what? If you break the rules next Friday, I’ll wear a pj top to work! I dare you 😉

Now just how do you expect your co-workers to get any work done with you wearing a pajama top? You should at least wear the bottoms. 😀
But it’s a deal. I will wear something wild and crazy to work this Friday. Perhaps I’ll leave the collar on my button-down shirt unbuttoned. I’ll be such a rebel!

This is such an interesting prompt! Have you heard of the movie “The Purge?”. After seeing that there is no way I would be in favor of it! I’m interested to see what others are saying.. Hope you are having a good week, Cyranny & that life has calmed down a bit!
LikeLiked by 1 person
Hey there, Cali Girl 🙂 Thank you! The prompt was actually inspired by the movie, which I was watching, when I published the post. I agree that it would be terribly wrong to allow such a gruesome thing to happen in our society.
Things are a bit more quiet this week… I must admit that I won’t totally rest until Dad has gone through his cardiac surgery, but until then, we just try to be patient and confident… I hope Life is good for you and DJ 🙂 *Big hugs*

It is getting less and less freezing, and we’ll soon see the snowbanks start melting. Usually when this happens, the snow disappears within days (at least in the city… takes a little more time outside Montréal).
Thanks for the prayers, dear you 🙂 It means a great deal to me! xx

I agree with the others, there maybe a few that would stray and do things they shouldn’t if there were not laws for 24 hrs. But that for the most part the majority of them would live life as normal. Unless you have really wronged someone I don’t think you would have anything to worry about.

I just hope we never live to find out 🙂 And if we do, I’ll be the first one to lock myself home, and wait for the 24 hours to pass 😛

I would not want this. There is already enough craziness going on and too many already taking on the role of vigilantes.
