Traveling bloggers’ help needed, please!

Happy Wednesday Lovelies,

Just a quick note to ask for a little help… Next Monday, my best friend is flying to Morocco, and she had a question for me.

Knowing that Dirhams can’t be bought outside the country, she wondered what would be the best way to get cash money once there? The last time I visited Northern Africa was a loooong time ago, and I don’t remember what I did back then.

Do you think it is better to bring cash money and change it there? Would you withdraw Dirhams with a debit, ot or credit card? Would you recommend doing so at the airport, or going downtown?

I really hope you can help me help her! If you’ve been to Morocco lately, or if you live there, please share the knowledge!! Who knows, you might help more than just my friend.

  1. What so I had info to share. My friend visited years ago and raves about the people, food, clothes, landscapes and art. I hope your friend has a great trip!

  2. If you have something like travelex money card that would work. Depending on the rates I would use a credit card as I believe there is more protection but it depends on your company and rates, the best bet would be to talk to the credit card company.

    You can exchange at the airport or a hotel for a fairly decent rate apparently.

    I say this as my own knowledge but my Dad has just come back

Not been to Morocco for a very long time but when travelling anywhere I usually take at least $50 cash to exchange at the airport to ensure taxi fare to where ever you’re staying … then they will know best way. Using Aussie credit cards overseas is far too expensive, take enough cash if it’s just a short trip then shop around for best exchange rates.

  4. I am yet to find anywhere that a debit card doesn’t work. Credit cards are fine for direct purchases or hotel payments and the like but lunacy as a means of getting cash. You might have to apply some inflation to Kate’s taxi fare estimates, I’m afraid.

    1. Thank you, Brutus 🙂 I know you travel a lot, and your advice is precious! We found out something interesting today… Some banks here use 5 digits PIN, instead of the usual 4 digits. It seems like these cards can’t be used in Morocco, unless the PIN # is changed for a 4 digits number before leaving Canada… We learn a little something everyday!

      2. Well the fact is that we have both 4 and 5 digits PINs here… depending on the bank we’re with.

Credit cards and Debits cards get horrendous Charges on them so I don’t use them.When I went to Morocco I took cash and changed it at the hotel as it was easier than trying to find a bank or money exchange and the hotel rate wasn’t bad.I do take a card for emergencies or incase I run out of cash.And you friend will need to haggle for everything she or he buys make sure they start of really low at around 20% 0f the asking price so that they end up paying 50% of the asking price,if they start higher they will end up paying to much for anything they buy.xx Rachel Speedy’s Mum

    1. Thank you Rachel… you bring a good point here, and I had forgotten to tell her to be ready to bargain… People who haven’t been in countries that use bargaining get a little surprised at first. It was like a game for my Dad, when we used to live in Guinea, so he taught me at a young age… I forwarded your tips to my friend, she thanks all of you for the kind advices!! xx
