What are you afraid of?

large

We’re all afraid of something. It is natural. Fear (when it is not overwhelming) is a way to protect us from doing stupid dangerous things. Being scared is an innate tool to stay alive and as un-hurt as possible.

I must say, that all in all, I am not someone who has a lot of real fears. There are a lot of things that I don’t like, but not to the point of being scared of them (example: spiders).

I don’t feel insecure walking alone in the streets of Montréal by night (ok, I wouldn’t go to some particular neighbourhoods, but that’s called being smart, not scared). I tried bungee jumping, I jumped out of an airplane (ok, let’s give the credit of me living to tell to the guy who was strapped to my back, but still… I did it!) In Guinea I went hicking with friends in places where there were all kind of potential killer animals and creatures and I swam in waters where I could have been hurt by a shark, or a manta ray. I hope not to hurt too much, but I think I can say in all honesty that I am not scared of death, per say.

But there is one thing that makes me totally paranoïac, and that is to be caught in a fire, or to have my home burned down. I absolutely dread that. I always double check the stove after using it, I never leave any appliance running if I leave the appartment, and will always be the first one to notice a strange burning smell!

I don’t know where that comes from… My parents were never afraid of fire, so they didn’t transfer that fear to me. And I never had traumatic incidents happen to me, involving fire. So this phobia is a real mystery to me. But it is there…

Crawling in the shadows… The monster under my bed.

What about you… What are you really afraid of?

  1. Hahaha! You’re like a female version of me. Many things I don’t like, and a few there’s no way in hell I’d ever do, but not really fearful of much. I’d really rather not fly if I can help it, and I have a strong, strong disliking of dolls. They’re creepy, man. I’d NEVER have one in my house. 👀

    1. Mouahahahaha I totally get you! I see a clear difference between things I strongly dislike and things I fear…

When you say we’re alike, do you mean that you are scared of fire too? Because if you do, you’ll probably understand how not nervous at all I am lately… There is an old pyromaniac lady in our neighbourhood the cops can’t seem to catch! She lights random fires in trash cans and behind buildings…. Seriously, if the police force doesn’t catch her soon, I think I will go crazy!

      1. No, I don’t necessarily fear fire, though I probably should In this old farm house. Flying is the one thing I have second thoughts about, concerns, and even say a small prayer before doing. But like you, I’ve bungee jumped, I rock climbed, I’m a whitewater kayaker, I scuba, I’ve swam with reef shafks. But flying is the only thing I….I don’t know, get concerns of the danger of it. I know the stats, and I fly when I have to. But it’s gonna end in two ways: landing at my destination, or plummet to earth. Not sure about you, but that seems kinda 50/50, and I don’t like those odds. 😃

      2. Funny, I feel like I should fear that, knowing a lot of people uncomfortable with flying.

It seems like a reasonable fear to me. Maybe I feel fine with it because I started really young, but I get a kick out of taking off the ground. It’s almost a drug, really. I live in a flying corridor, and everytime a plane flies above my head, I wish I was in it 😛

      3. I’ve flown since I was a kid too, my parents divorced when I was young and dad moved to South Carolina shortly after. I’d fly to see him a few times a year from 7 on. I love the act of flying. But frankly, I don’t trust the cost cutting asshats that run the airlines. Cutting corners on something that hits 20,000 feet is not exactly confidence inducing. Plus, with 5 of us, it’s a hell of a lot cheaper just to drive. 😃

      4. My Gawd, I didn’t think about that…. Now I am torn… I really wanted to drive all the way to Denmark, but I don’t want you to go seek a planet with oceans…. Aaaahhhhhggghhhhghh

  2. Earthquakes. The idea of being swallowed by a large fissure from an earthquake. Spiders are gross. I would love to do the flying part, not from a plane but maybe hang gliding? Did you make any snow angels? Pics of snow or haven’t I read that far yet?⛄️☃️🎄💗

    1. I have to find a place to make your snow angel this weekend 🙂 Snow won’t be an issue 😛 I just got to be close enough to home not to get sick LOL

I experienced a strong earthquake once. It was very frightening, but I must say, I don’t fear them here in Montreal. I wouldn’t move to Japan or California where they are much more common 😛

  3. I haven’t been doing much of the experiences, as you have had, Cyranny. I think, that I have had my experiences in other ways by not being scared to try something new or to move around, latest to Spain.
One thing, as I was very scared for, when I arrived in Spain, was snakes. I have had some bad experiences with these, mostly because of stupid behaving humans. Today I’m not that scared any longer after seeing the fear in the eyes. When I meet snakes here, I respect them and let them pass, then I pass. I just hope not to meet a more aggressive one. The most big one, I met here, was between 2 1/2 – 3 meters long and thick like my arm. It could live well by the rabbits here, but this snake didn’t belong to the nature here. Snakes here are usually not that thick or long. So someone did release it. I was told a little year later, that one did find the snake dead at a road. Same person didn’t believe me, when I told, that I met this and how huge it was…..

    1. Wow… for some reason, I wouldn’t have thought there were so many snakes in Spain…

I did cross the path of a few of them while I lived in Africa… Like you, I soon learned to respect their territory and never had a bad experience with them. The only time I got scared was when I was at a friend’s house and the gardener came to tell us to stay locked in the house and put towels at the bottom of the door. There was a Mamba in the backyard, and these are very poisonous creatures! Men teamed up to catch it and release it far from town, where it belonged.

I agree that moving to such a different country and learning to live there is a big accomplishment! Not a lot of people would be able to make a home elsewhere like you did! 🙂

      1. I think, that if people wish to live out their dreams and not just dream, there would be much more people moving around in our world.
I’m happy, that I haven’t met a mamba, they don’t live here, unless someone have had them for years in cage and then release them like the snake, as I met. People told me, that the description sounds like it was a kind of python. This one was big enough to take rabbits. They are usually not that thick here and you mostly find them in natural areas.

      2. That impromptu meeting must have been very scary! That’s one big snake!! 🙂

What you say about people dreaming, and how a lot of them would move if they really acted… It made me wonder which country would keep most of its original inhabitants 😉

  4. Bees. My mum owned hampshire blacks when I was about 6 or 7. These things were vicious little fuckers. One day I ran out in the garden to tell her something, not realising she was getting the honey, because they couldn’t sting here, cause she was in a bee suit, they went for me, in my shorts and t-shirt, 568 stings later (ok it might have 26) and I have a fear. It has gotten better as I have gotten older though.

      1. I don’t care that she worked 12 hours a day as a nurse, that she was always there for me as a child. She still is an amazing person, as her youngest and therefore very spoilt child, she ruined it by having these bastard bees. And to be honest yes, she probably did tell them to attack me, which is why she should love me more than my other sisters.

To be slightly more serious, I know she felt so guilty for so long about that, to the point I now only bring it up once every couple of weeks rather than every other day

      2. LOOOOL just stop telling her… and buzz whenever you walk by her instead! When she asks what’s going on, you can just tell her “nothing”… Straight highway to Crazytown!!

    1. I sure hope this shouting is meant on a humorous note… If not, I am sorry you feel that way. I didn’t mean to steal anything, and just had to write about this after facing what’s probably my single phobia.

      1. Glad to read that 🙂 I thought so, but I learned to be careful online… If you had been serious, I don’t think that LOLing you would have help evening things out 😛
